No Russians in the QFs again - is it all -ova?

Another big event and yet again no Russians in the QFs.

No Russian made the semis of Indian Wells.

No Russian made the semis of the Aus Open.

Only 1 Russian (Dementieva) currently lies in the top 10 of the WTA Race; the country's three other biggest stars are in the doldrums : Kuznetsova lies at no 38, Safina at 42 and Sharapova at 44, well below the likes of Elena Baltacha of Great Britain at 25(!).

Do you think it is just a poor start to the year and some of these players will bounce back on clay or grass or do you think that the Russians in general are in retreat..?

Has someone already defeated Kuznetsova?

Sveta limped off to a 6-3 6-0 defeat by Marion Bartoli yesterday - no QF for her.

In fairness Safina, Sharapova & Kuznetsova are all injured, Demenentieva has had awful draws in the big events, the talent is still there with the likes of Zvonareva & Petrova (even if the brain isn't), Kirilenko is looking more solid and Kleybanova & Pavlyuchenkova are showing signs of being the next wave. I'm sure the Russian Fed cup team doesn't need to worry just yet.

Vera Zvonareva * Ana Ivanović * Li Na * Laura Robson ......

Re: No Russians in the QFs again - is it all -ova?

The main difference is that alot more countries now have pathetic players in throngs, not just Russia.

but really - the russians who make an impact aren't the ones who play Nick Bolleteri tennis, even if they aren't necesserily the top of the crop.

if you have nothing important to say, please do so in non-tennis forum. if you have something you think is important, but is actually rubbish regarding anything other than tennis - please do so in the non-tennis forum. if you have something tennis related to say, but it's actually "OMG, X player is so h0t!1" or "who has the biggest boobs on the wtatour" please do so in menstennisforum, under "wta forum". if you have something important, tennis-related and interesting to say please do so. No one in the world can understand how much tennis means to someone, except another fan.

Re: No Russians in the QFs again - is it all -ova?

Last year the whole clay season was dominated by Dinara and Sveta, so we will see.
Having Justine back makes the competition at the top better, but it has been a slow start to the year by Sveta, Dinara, Lena and Maria.
Alisa and Anastasia are improving, still have a long way to go.

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter....
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there
Enjoy This Moment!!
HEALTH and HAPPINESS to EVERYONE

It's not 'ova'
Dinara, Sveta and Maria are injured and Lena got unlucky with the draw.
They'll be back.
