What Does Marion Have To Do?

I have a very soft spot for Marion Bartoli. She seems to give so much effort. I remember at my school there was an annual award for 'effort'. Not talent, but 'effort'. Marion always seems to give her all but just can't progress while other players do. Watching her against Radwanska I wondered why Marion has not developed/gone further. Is it her 2 handed shots? Her serve? Her weight/fitness? Or does she just not have the talent to match her effort?

I would love to see her win a real biggie and think she is quite a character - she seems to have a real personality bless her!

Re: What Does Marion Have To Do?

She has to finally move on from her father as a coach. His eccentric style has worn her potential out, and she needs a good, fundamental coach that can truly improve her game. Fitness has to be priority #1, and it seems to be too sensitive of an issue between the two. Time to move on Marion if you want to be serious about your career.

If you want to see how parents can mishandle their child's career, Donald Young is exhibit A.

Re: What Does Marion Have To Do?

Well, her father once stated that she has the physical ability of a child.
That's why she's always injuried as she's pushing her body well beyond it potential.

Plus, he/they feel like it's better for her to have some weight as it is better for her groundstrokes and it is "protecting" her. They beleive that being Serena-fit would be bad for her.

Maybe working on the cardio could be a good thing... There was nothing left in the tank against Radwanska.

Re: What Does Marion Have To Do?

Her dad taught her unusual technique, that probably holds her back. Its too late to start over. She has to get a coach for strategy, so at least she makes smart on court decisions

From an observer's standpoint, it seems like he has a mental choke-hold on her and she will do whatever he says even if it isn't right. How can he openly admit her deficiencies without destroying her confidence. When I watch Marion Bartoli play, I never think to myself, "Wow, what a confident girl. The sky is the limit for her." Even when she is steam-rolling opponents, she has this unsure temperament about her.

Re: What Does Marion Have To Do?

Bartoli will always have weaknesses in her game due to playing her two-handed style. She doesn't have the same level of power, ball-striking, or raw talent to overcome them to the extent Seles did.

To build on what she has inherently, she would need to get a reliable match-in, match-out serve and work on her ability to finish points off at net. You cannot be a two-handed grinder with suspect movement/defense.

I'd say improve the serve.

At least we can be entertainined by all the new service motions she'll switch to.

I think she could get a little faster too. She's sublimely consistent. With the kind of pace she can play with when she's in position, it would really help her to get to more balls on time.

She could start to be coached by father Radwanski

Re: What Does Marion Have To Do?

Part of the charm of Marion is that she has gone so far with a game and fitness level that are unorthodox, to say the least. But you know what--she makes it work. When I watch her I feel like I'm pulling for the underdog, the "nerd girl" who has good intentions and tries harder. (I say that with love--people say the same things about Aravane, call her "Arab" and "gypsy" and "disco queen" and "brainless ballbasher" and "fat" yada yada yada. These things spring out of ignorance and fear IMO, and become most noticeable when the "unorthodox" player starts to win)

Any of those things you listed could apply--to any player looking to improve. Not just Marion.

Re: What Does Marion Have To Do?

Get fit. Stop believing her father's bs about 'the physical ability of a child' and needing extra weight to 'protect' her. Stop making excuses every time she's down in a match. Believe in her own ability.

So, preferably without huge emotional ructions, she should move onto a more professional coach who can help her move forward.

Re: What Does Marion Have To Do?

Get fit and develop a reliable serve. If she had the fitness of a Dementieva or a Zvonareva, I think she'd be top 10.

Schnyder Jankovic Petrova Kvitova Schiavone

Zvonareva Kleybanova Mattek-Sands Strycova

Niculescu Lisicki Razzano Koukalova Errani Pironkova

Re: What Does Marion Have To Do?

Hard to say really. Shes not an athletic person, so she has to work harder than a lot of the girls and is more prone to injury. Shs never going to be skinny, some people just are that shape.

In regards to Daddy Bartoli, Im very mixed about the whole thing. Shes very close with him and getting a new coach would be a very risky decision emotionally, and even though people laugh at him on the tennis scene, I really doubt she'd have gotten to where she is today without him. But I would like to see her taking on 2 coaches, because I think she has the potential to get further.

Mentally shes al over the place. Sometimes she fights (Sugi in Dubai, Bepa in Beijing, JJ and Venus in Stanford) and then other times she utterly collapses (her chinese losses this year are easy examples). Its impossible to predict her results.

Serve is an obvious thing. Though she is a very small person so it'll never be a weapon.

This too. Work on her mentality.

Re: What Does Marion Have To Do?

As her father said, She's the boss. I don't think that coach is the problem. She only has problems vs top 15 players. When she's on, she's destroying the others, especially on hard courts.

In order to be more competitive vs top 15 players, i would love her to have a one hand forehand when needed and not only as net approach (MP vs Stosur in Stanford). Sometimes, it will be more effective to play a dropshot i/o a hard hitting. And also to go more often at the net where she can be good (former 12 as doubles player).
