The Jewel in Arantxa's crown: The 1994 US Open (youtube high quality footage!)

I remember following the scores for this match on teletext when I was but a boy! That final game seemed to take forever, and then finally, 6-4 to ASV in the final set. Amazing win.

Now, finally, I can view it. Praise the lord for youtube! lol

It really did a lot to change perceptions of Arantxa, this win. She'd already been a finalist at the US Open a couple of years earlier (defeating Graf along the way), so it was no massive surprise. But she was no longer 'the bridesmaid', or a claycourt specialist. This triumph saw her ascend to no.1 in the world soon afterwards, and prove she could win slams on a faster surface.

It's true that her game was nothing 'special', but her charisma somehow made her game - and her matches - more interesting. She wore her heart on her sleeve, and gave everything she had at all times. She was the pluckiest street fighter there's ever been in women's tennis.

Incidentally, she reached 8 out of 12 slam finals in 1994-1996. Out of 12 slam finals in total.

Wozniacki would be lucky to play like Sanchez-Vicario...She has yet to show the kind of all-court ability that Arantxa possessed in her repertoire, and that is what set Arantxa apart from players like Amanda Coetzer, Caroline Wozniacki (so far...still young, so lots of time to develop her game even more), and so many others who have great defensive skills but lacked some of the on-court game to be able to change things up and keep their opponents that extra bit off balance.

But he loves you."

Re: The Jewel in Arantxa's crown: The 1994 US Open (youtube high quality footage!)

I LOVE ARANTXA!!! i own this match on DVD, but remember we had a family reunion with like 30 people at my house when the final was on, and I was watching (at age 10) and almost started crying when Arantxa lost the first 6-1, and then running around the house so excited when she won the 2nd... my cousin said "steffi's way better, arantxa's got nothing" and i was so upset again... and then she closed it out!

great win for Arantxa, so crucial to her drive to #1, and rivals her 1998 french as her most special win

It will always be Arantxa, hall of famer! and martina hingis and kim clijsters - amazing legends
ana ivanovic and the italian girls, especially pennetta (forza azzurre! RG CHAMP FRANCESCA AND FINALIST SARA!)
aga, vika, sam, na in the next tier
NEVER say "I don't care who wins, I just want good tennis"

Re: The Jewel in Arantxa's crown: The 1994 US Open (youtube high quality footage!)

I love this match, and not just for Rennae Stubbs featuring late in the first set.

Graf 'could not be playing any better' but no way was that going to discourage Arantxa. Some will say her game wasn't much but she could stay with and beat Graf at her best. Another reason why it's pointless to put an asterix on Graf's post-93 career, because Arantxa's heart alone was more than enough competition to "validate" Graf's mid-90's success IMO. Arantxa is ridiculously overshadowed by the whole Graf vs Seles thing. And this match exhibits Sanchez's all-court game in all it's glory. I don't know how one could watch it and say her game was nothing special (maybe, perhaps other ones she played but not this one).

at the Wozniacki comparison. I don't see any way they are alike sorry. Wozniacki doesn't have any of Sanchez's tactical knowledge, ability and all-court game. We see in this match Sanchez changing up her game, coming in, being aggressive, hitting screaming backhand winners, flattening out the forehand, slicing, lobs. Where do we ever see that from Wozniacki?

This was the first match I ever watched from start to finish, and I already had a favorite. My perception of it back then (I was 6 or something) was that Steffi was playing GOAT tennis before her back was gone. Need to rewatch it again I guess.

Oh ASV was very special! I just meant that there was nothing per se about her game which would have made one marvel. But you're absolutely right, before Hingis there probably wasn't a player who was as proficient in all areas of the court. It's scandalous the way her game is written off.

You don't get to all the slam finals at least twice, win titles on all surfaces, reach a YEC final on carpet, be twice a Miami winner AND an all-time great doubles player with nothing to hurt with. Oh, and reach number one.

Exactly. It's ludicrous. It's like all those 122376899 threads saying Kirilenko/Chakvetdaze/Wozniacki plays like Hingis. Some comparisons just lose credibility almost instantly.

As for this one, it'd be like comparing a Zebra to a Donkey.

This was one (of about 5 matches) that steffi should never have lost - I knew the writing was on the wall after the tie-break. good scrambling/retrieving by sanchez, but to me she was not much more than an annoying little terrier who could bite you somedays, but was ultimately harmless...and she had dubious sportswomanship, too.

Which mid-90s match are you going to rediscover next, Steffica?

I would suggest Martinez-Navratilova.

A single flow'r he sent me, since we met./All tenderly his messenger he chose;
Deep-hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet - One perfect rose.
I knew the language of the floweret;/'My fragile leaves,' it said, 'his heart enclose.'
Love long has taken for his amulet/One perfect rose.
Why is it no one ever sent me yet/One perfect limousine, do you suppose?
Ah no, it's always just my luck to get/One perfect rose.

You can see at minute 01:08 Gabriel Urpí, who was Arantxa's coach at the time, now taking care of Flavia.

Thanks Steffica I haven't seen this in too long! ASV
