Who is mentally The GOAT ?

Serena once said that tennis is 90% mental. She has proven it several times as we all know.

My top 3 are :

1/ Serena
2/ Seles
3/ Evert

Evert was better known for her mental consistency rather than for her dramatic comebacks. But both Serena and Seles ('91 and '92, but even in 1996 when she won the AO) have been able to win slams staging remarkable comebacks several times. I'd give the edge to Serena for her MPs saved.

It's hard to argue against those three (or Graf for that matter). Having said that, maybe some lady who lost in the second round of Wimbledon in 1935 was mentally just as tough. Maybe she just had the misfortune to be less talented.

Active Players:
1-Serena
2-Wickmayer

Daniilidou. Venus. Azarenka. Halep. Wickmayer.
Cornet. Ivanovic. Vesnina.. Vaidisova. Krajicek.
Paszek. Begu. Cirstea. Lisicki. Pavlyuchenkova.
Pironkova. Stephens. Tatishvili. McHale. Flipkens.
Grammatikopoulou ~ Papamichail ~ Sakkari
I'm obsessed with the Greek players. Deal with it.

Re: Who is mentally The GOAT ?

I'd say Serena, but she also has the game to back it up.
If it only comes to mental strength with a weak game, I really can't think of any atm.

Do no harm, but take no shit.

She's actually never lost a match in AO after having won the 1st set.

good point.

I'd choose Evert, just because controlling your shots with the old wooden rackets, on grass courts, was so much harder than using today's oversize head, composite rackets on hard courts. Even clay courts from 35-49 years ago were a different proposition than today's clay. Roland Garros is practically a ahrad court tournament, the clay so so well groomed.

NOTE: You take a Hustler centerfold, combine it with a female body builder, and sprinkle in an Olympic sprinter, and you get ... Serena Williams. She's a genetic freak. The game is 90% mental FOR HER. She has, in essence, no physical limitations.

Proud to be an American
Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

But Chrissie had her fair share of comebacks too, probably more than Seles or Graf overall.
Here's a list of some of the best, not always coming back from the brink of defeat but managing to change the dynamic of the match in dramatic fashion after losing the first set:
63 36 75 def. Wade 1980 Wightman Cup r128
46 64 76 def. Austin 1981 Toyota Championships R3
36 61 76 def. Navratilova 1987 VS of Houston Final
26 63 63 def. Navratilova 1986 French Open Final
26 64 62 def. Goolagong 1975 VS of Boston SF
46 64 62 def. Navratilova 1980 Wimbledon SF
57 64 62 def. Goolagong 1975 US Open Final
46 61 61 def. Austin 1980 US Open SF
46 61 61 def. Mandlikova 1980 US Open Final
46 76 61 def. King 1973 Hilton Head SF
46 63 76 def. King 1975 Tuscon Final

But yeah, I agree with your list and would add in Graf.

michelle larcher de brito

Anyway, for players that are actually good, Serena and early-90s Seles are definitely the tops.

Also, pre-1999 RG Hingis is up there
