Can Melanie Oudin be the next Meghann Shaughnessy?

I am curious because there seems to be no middle class in the US. And I don't expect Oudin to get to #1 .Either you are #1, or you don't win. From 2000-2009, you had Venus, Serena, Lindsay, Jennifer and Monica. But if you werent #1, chances became few and far between. Non #1 US winners.
2000-Raymond, Shaughnessy, Rubin
2001-Tu, Shaughnessy
2002-Raymond, Craybas, Rubin
2003-Shaughnessy, Raymond, Rubin
2004-Frazier
2005-Frazier
2006-King, Shaughnessy
2007-Shaughnessy
2008-None
2009-None

US Tennis needs a successful mid level player.

I see Melanie as an Amy Frazier type. Will have the big wins here and there and be consistently average

She needs to bulk up and work out some of the technical kinks.

She played doubles at the AO with Molik, played a few events at the end of the season last year, but has struggled a lot with knee injury and I think most recently a hip injury as well.

Well Meghann actually had a good serve and then she net game became good and in her later years she was so consistent from the back of the court.

I think Melanie being compared to Meghann is overreaching.
She should honestly stop with the idea that she can be anything close to the next Henin and just hustle out there like Cibulkova does and hope that will be enough to get her in the top 15.

Maybe she will win 20 grand slams, she is young, lets not write her off.

Good luck to the Aussie and Balkan girls!

I like Melanie and see her hovering around #11-20, entering the Top10 at some point and ocassionally achieve a big win!

Rest in Peace Bally!

i see oudin as Harkleroad 2.0.... nice groundstrokes, no weapons, big heart, no big serve... i don't see her being much more than a top 50 floater. We need Big Babe tennis back in america. until we get the next Davenport, or Capriati, or Vee-Star/Ree Ree, it ain't happening.

This. She's showed she has game, obviously.

I mean who would've thought Dinara, JJ, and even Ana (to a lesser extent) would have been number one? Hard work pays off on the WTA.

My number one: Victoria Azarenka

ATP: Novak Djoković

Crazy Frenchies! Gilles Simon Alizé Cornet

Maybe there's Chanda Rubin in there. I don't know if she's that smart. But athletically, not Shaugnessy.

Pretty avatar tonybotz and yep - that's who I've compared her to as well - especially in relation to the hype. To be fair, I think she's already proven that she's better than Harkleroad but I still get the impression that much of the fuss is because she's young, blonde and of course endearingly 'plucky' or whatever. I'll give her time, but at the present I'm not bowled over by her game.

You got one correct - young. Any "young" American player- woman or man - who had the results she did at Wimbledon and the USO would have got as much hype from the American media.
