What if women played the best of five sets in majors?

What would happen if women would play the best of five sets format in the slams? I don't just mean in the final, but for each round. Would it make any difference in terms of who the eventual winner(s) would be? Awhile back I was watching a Dementieva match and the commentator said that if the women would play best of five that Dementieva would always be one of the top favorites and would probably have won several slams already because she's one of - if not the fittest WTA player.

More injuries, and long boring matches. I think that in today's game with so many hard court tournaments, men should be play best 2 of 3 in the Slams till the semi's, then 3 of 5 in the semi's and finals. Many of the men's matches are just too long, playing 3 of 5 for all 7 rounds.

Well, my intention is not really to have a debate about whether it would be a good idea or not for women to play best of five sets, although that too can be discussed of course. My question is more along the lines of, IF they would play best of five, which players would do better and which ones would do worse than they do now?

No one would watch women's tennis anymore.

I always wanted to be somebody. If I made it, it's half because I was game enough to take a lot of punishment along the way and half because there were a lot of people who cared enough to help me.

I don't know if the public is ready to sit through a match with a combined 200-300 errors.

Only Serena Williams would win tournaments. The rest will retire in the 3rd.

Re: What if women played the best of five sets in majors?

The top players would be even more dominant than they already are. Someone like Serena would probably have three more slams.

The men complain about having to work harder, but on the other hand it's harder to beat better players in a best of five than it is in a best of three. I wonder how many of Rogers slams would he have lost if they were best of three?

Azarenka would have to retire from every match. And I love Vika.

I think Dementieva would definitely fare better, because she's probably the most fit player out there. I think Venus would to better too, with potential 5 sets I think her game would find its form more often than not. I think Serena would be even harder to close out, but I don't know if she'd necessarily "do better" in a 5th set.

people would train to make sure they could stand up for 5 sets but the results probably wouldn't change since mentality makes up for 90% of both tours and we know who the strongest are on both sides

If it was in a fifth set then I agree it probably would be just like a third set not much difference. But the biggest difference is that someone like Jill Craybass beating her at Wimbledon proabably would never of happened. Serena would have time to find her game, and in general, all the better players will have more of an advantage. There would be less fluke wins and we would see the top players play each other more often. Anybody can take one set off of anybody, taking two is a little harder, but three is even tougher. Serena would have more slams than Roger if that was the case, IMO.

The fitness issues and quality of play make five sets not appealing for women's tennis though.
