OZ 2010 'Grades'

Good tournament, but an awful lot of accomplished players went out to very poor performances.

Grading System: If you play to your seed, its a 'B'. Except in one case I had to drop it to a B-.

Grade A
01 Serena .......
-- Henin ........
16 Na Li ........ SF .. def Wozniacki, Venus
Grade A-
35 Jie Zheng .... SF .. def Bartoli. (This result is a case of a draw opening up, but still congrats. She had to win the matches.)
Grade B+ (all these players exceeded expectation)
58 Kirilenko .... QF
59 Makarova ..... 2R .. Beat a top twenty player. When you're ranked outside the top fifty, a big deal.
16 Wickmayer .... 4R .. loses to Henin, beat Pennetta
19 Petrova ...... QF .. loses to [--] Henin - Petrova had an excellent tournament, beat Kuznetsova, beat Clijsters

Grade B (Played to seed, lost to higher ranked player)
07 Azarenka ..... QF .. loses to [01] Serena - Played to her seed, and looked good and yet exposed, losing
09 Zvonareva .... 4R .. loses to [07] Azarenka
13 Stosur ....... 4R .. loses to [01] Serena - played to her seed, lost to champ

31 Bondarenko ... 4R .. loses to [35] Zheng, beat JJ
Grade B- (Played to seed, lost to lower raked player. Looked bad doing it.)
06 Venus ........ QF .. loses to [17] Na Li - Played to her seed, which for Venus @ OZ is no given
Pass (All losses I don't condemn for various reasons)
05 Dementieva ... 2r .. loses to [--] Henin - I'm giving her a pass on that. Henin is a better player
10 A Radwanska .. 3R .. loses to [17] Schiavone - Schiavone is a good slow court player
12 Pennetta ..... 2R .. loses to [16] Wickmayer - Wickmayer would have been a top 16 seed, so Pennetta skates on that

Fail (Bad losses to lesser players)
03 Kuznetsova ... 4R .. loses to [19] Petrova
04 Wozniacki .... 4r .. loses to [17] Na Li
08 Jankovic ..... 3R .. loses to [32] A Bondarenko
11 Bartoli ...... 3R .. loses to [35] Jie Zheng
14 Sharapova .... 1R .. loses to [58] Kirilenko - A disaster
15 Clijsters .... 3R .. loses to [19] Petrova - Close in rank, Petrova is former top ten player. But ....
18 Razzano ...... 1R .. loses to [59] Makarova - Not that much was expected of Razzano here, but any loss by a top twenty player to a player outside the top fifty is bad.
20 Ivanovic ..... 2R .. loses to [36] Dulko

incomplete
02 Safina ....... 4R .. loses to [58] Kirilenko (ret)
NOTE: Corrections cheerfully accepted. I had to rush this.

Alona Bondarenko must be in B+. She beat Jankovic and reached 4R.

And if your life were gold, how long do you think you'd stay living?

Re: OZ 2010 'Grades'

Safina was playing well before she aggravated an old injury against Kirilenko - so I wouldn't be so harsh on her. She deserves a better grade for her performances up to the point she got injured.

So long...

Good point. I can't just treat that as a JJ loss. AB was barely seeded. OTOH, she lost to Zheng.

Re: OZ 2010 'Grades'

I don't think it is fair to give Safina that harsh a grade. Maybe an incomplete where you take her French Open results and apply it for both.....after all she did have a doctors note.

I am not conceited, I am just convinced

That's probably more fair. It was a retirement.

Re: OZ 2010 'Grades'

Zheng gets an A-? She beat Bartoli, Kirilenko and Bondarenko. Taking advantage of an open draw doesn't mean anything, but a 1&0 loss in the SF does though.

I would give Azarenka, Wickmayer and Dementieva an A- over Zheng.

Re: OZ 2010 'Grades'

You have to give Petrova more credit, she belongs in the same category or even higher than Zheng.

She beat two reign grand slam champions, and really in a good way.

Let's call it a G. That's one letter below F.
This would also be Clijsters mark.

Azarenka, Wickmayer and Dementieva only did, ultimately, what history said they should. Zheng achieved far above her resume. It's all about expectation. Unseeded player makes the semis, beats a couple seeds, second ever in her country's history, yada yada yada .....

I agree about the quality of her wins. But she's also a former top ten player, who still should still be physically in her prime. She's supposed to have that kind of ability.

Jie Zheng is 26 years old, and her career to date is winning Estoril, Stockholm and Hobart. Then she makes the semis of the slam that's most important in her home country, the one where everybody could see her in primetime. Half a billion people may have been watching this woman play tennis.

This is like a community theatre actor suddenly playing Broadway, and getting nominated for a Tony award. In things like this, who you are matters, it's not just what you achieve.

Wickmayer also went through qualifying, so a high grade is very worthy IMO

Re: OZ 2010 'Grades'

I'm sorry I don't agree with Venus' ranking. Yes she did self-destruct and should have beaten Na. But still making the QF for just the 2nd time in 5 years is good. Finally a LITTLE more consistency at a slam other than Wimbledon.

Keep in mind, her last year GS performances:

2r
3r
F
4r

So QF is a definite improvement.
