Nathalie Tauziat and her AO record mystery

Hi guys since i was a kid i've looked on her profile and wondering why she had chosen not to play AO for such a long streak she played only three times out of almost 20 years of her career anyone know the reason ?

the girl also did beat Serena in Paris Indoor final and reached world number three in 2000's

She started playing the Grand Slams in the middle of the 80s when it was still more common to skip the Australian Open, I think.

Re: Nathalie Tauziat and her AO record mystery

Wow that is one long career.
In 16 years she didn't miss any of the other slams, not once, including 18 straight French Opens.

This is most likely related to her lack of AO's played.

Still, very strange in an era where all the slams are equal and that Tauziat was a top 10/20 player & slam finalist.

Re: Nathalie Tauziat and her AO record mystery

Yeah, the AO wasn't taken seriously in the '80s, really, and there was no A0 in '86.

Even in the early '90s it seems like some players skipped it--a lot of them hated the heat and the Rebound Ace and the early start. I think it was the mid-90s when it started to be considered on equal footing with the others.

That's not true, it started to be taken seriously in the early '80s.
(in 1981 Nav def. Evert
in 1982 Evert def. Nav etc...)

And the reason why there was no AO in 1986 is just because from 1982 to 85 the AO was played in December. Then it was decided to have the tournament played in January as of 1987. Hence no tournament in 1986.

I was just about to say, she's an old broad.

A few top players always showed up, including Lendl and Wilander on the men's side. But the fields in the early '80s were still generally weaker than at the other three slams until after the shift in '87.

This is a women's tennis forum, as far as I know. You got it wrong, admit it, then move on.

No, he's not wrong.

*Out of the last 14 GS tournaments Martina N played, none of those was the Australian (she even played RG twice in that time )
*Out of the last 19 GS tournaments Chris played, just two of them were the Australian (she actually played 6 times in OZ while she played 18 times the USO, 18 times in W and 13 times in RG)
*Both Seles & Sánchez Vicario had won RG and played other GS semifinals before playing in Australia for the first time in the 90's
*Sabatini had played 4 GS semifinals before playing in Australia for the first time in 1989
*Novotna, Martínez, Myskina, Majoli...all of them had played several GS before playing in Australia.

These days things are different but don't make us believe that the Australian Open was taken that seriously by players back then because that is simply not true.

Miffedmax is right, nothingfails999.

STEP TO THIS!

As for Tauziat, she probably figured it wasn't worth the risk to travel so far when she couldn't even count on earning enough prize money to pay for her flight.

Re: Nathalie Tauziat and her AO record mystery

Nasty natalie liked to have a good long holiday.

For whatever reason, Oz Open offiicals bent over backwards for her when she first arrived, giving her a cc night match against another ill liked player Meskhi.

Her coach didn't support his players coming to oz either. When Reggie coached Fusai and Cohen Aloro they didn't come.

What happened to his case and Demongeot btw- did he get found guilty?

I think the last time Nasty Nat played oZ was the year she said she would retire so wanted to do one more tour. I watched the match against Jeyasaleen yeah Sonya won!! By this time she had written her nasty book, attacking 3 of my fav's, Julie, Sev and Amelie, f'ken mole.- so I hated her ven more. I think she even bagged Fusai.

To her crdit, she still finnished in the top 10 or near enough for many years when she only really played well from the grass season through to the end of the year
