Women's Tennis is back

First three set GS final since Wimbledon 2006.
Great display of tennis. Serving, Net play, variety, aggression off the serve and great fighting.

The rest of the women have been put on notice.
Hopefully the veterans can raise the level of the tour before they finally call it quits.

Uhuh. At this moment, only Venus and Kim comes close to both Serena and Justine. The others.... lets just say the width is as wide as the Grand Canyon.

Your sig picture exceeds the 200 pixel height limit.

Australian Open 2010 Final Result:-
Lost to Serena Williams 4-6, 6-3, 2-6 (Great job, girl! Now prepare for FO!)

Re: Women's Tennis is back

I wish people would stop mentioning Venus because of her past pedigree and because she's Serena's sister, because she's only a real factor 2 weeks of the year.

2009 - Won Dubai, made YEC final; 2008 won Zuich and YEC; Ended 2007-9 raned in top eight. And oh yeah, those 'two weeks'.

Wish whatever you want. How many players had a better last three years than Venus? Eight tournament wins including two slams, and a YEC, finishing in the top eight every year? Two? Maybe Three? Serena, Henin and who?

Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

When did she win those two slams again? That's right - during those "two weeks".

And that's great honestly. Lots of people would dream to have that kind of hold on Wimbledon. Or any slam.

I admit Doha was impressive and I thought she might actually turn things around from there... but let's face it, Venus is awful in half of the tournaments that actually matter. (And worse, she really doesn't care.) She's competitive in the other half, but only in one of them is she a true contender. We can count on her for quality matches at the US Open as we can count on her to actually not win those matches.

I agree. The match wasn't that high quality. Lots of bad errors from both.

Re: Women's Tennis is back

The big story for the WTA tour is 2 Chinese girls making a slam SF.
Sony extended their contract as main sponsor for a year, but this is an important year for the tour to show they can expand into China, which is becoming a major world financial power.

On the court it was big tournament for the 2 finalists,
and for Li who beat Venus and Caro. And Nadia, who beat 2 slam holders.
But Li and Nadia aren't known for the mental toughness to win majors.

The entire situation is funny. Justine fans calling the tour saved only because of her comeback... Yeah right.

the same applies to kim. She "only" wins at the us open. And i put only in invested commas because apparently winning multiple slams, getting to finals is some easy task.

Is there any creature on earth as unfortunate as an ugly woman?

Including Justine. Those two weeks will be just as important for Justine as well as Venus.

This.

Pains me to say, but it really isn't the Williams anymore, it's all about Serena...

Re: Women's Tennis is back

Objective look at AO top players

2 finalists are the 2 best players.

Venus, Sharapova, Kim, Sveta. It really wasn't a good event for the other multiple slam winners on the tour

Re: Women's Tennis is back

In my eyes the WTA may have a few of its stars back but the game still seems like something of a cheap imitation compared to what it used to be, even this time 2 years ago.

Re: Women's Tennis is back

It also wasn't a good tournament for former #1's Safina, Jankovic and Ivanovic.

The tour is still a mess, with a lot of the best players way off their best form.

If Serena, Justine, Venus, Maria, Kim, Sveta, Elena, Ana, Dinara, Jelena, Caro, Vera, Vika
if most of them were in form, there would be a lot of depth
