Serena def Justine: The most meaningful major win of Serena's career?

What say you?

I say yes. After Clijsters coming back and defeating Serena, here is Justine in only her second tournament back with even more on the line because it was a major final. I think this was the most significant victory for Serena coming off the US Open debacle. She made a pretty big statement here and shut up a lot of the doubters.

2007 is a very close second. As a matter of fact I think they are almost equally important for different reasons.

No. I would put AO 07 and AO 03 and FO 02 ahead of this victory. This was meaningful but it's not as meaningful as those I mentioned imo.

An important match for sure - but most meaningful or defining?

Winning the US Open against Hingis, the Serena Slam in Australia against Venus, AO 07 were all more career defining imo.

Excellent post (as usual ) and good point. One I admit I hadn't even thought of.

AO03 = AO07 = AO10

And, like you say, all for entirely different reasons.

AO03 - The significance of this win goes without saying. Serena Slam Completed, place in the history books etched

AO07 - Who gave her a chance in the media? Not many. She showed that she was and is the most determined and talented female tennis player on the planet (all due respect to the other ladies, esp. Venus and Justine)by some margin!

AO10 - This match was probably more important to 'Real' women's tennis fans, who have followed the tour avidly for years and know these two players to be, along with Venus an equal second with Henin, the best players of their generation. Serena losing a second slam in a row to a returning Belgian, would have just infuriated her I sense, plus, she shut up the media about her Little US Open incident (I hope because frankly I'm bored of it).

So yes, it's hard for me to put this down as anything other than no.1, Victory at the Aussie was sweet against Dinara, for so many reasons, but knowing she did it against a player noone can undermine, makes it all the sweeter. Her bitterest rival, dispatched (albeit with a fight ) on the biggest stage in tennis! She must feel good about this one.

I know Serena Fans do!

I think with her serve and her athleticism, her power, her court mobility, I just think when she’s on, she’s the greatest player we’ve ever seen, ever. Now, whether her record is the greatest remains to be seen because she hasn’t retired yet. But I think she is really the greatest player. I have seen Martina and Steffi at their best. There are little chinks in those players’ armor, but it was a different era, where you didn’t need to be the perfect player.

I would say no and yes LOL! Important in a sense that she shut the haters up, on who is the best player of her generation and no player better to do that against than henin.

But I do think her A.O. '07 was the best because she had a horrible 2006 and was written out by everyone and performed some of the best tennis i have ever seen a women do against a player who had recently won the previous GS.

Venus ~ Serena ~ Nadal

Re: Serena def Justine: The most meaningful major win of Serena's career?

AO 2003 will probably always be the most meaningful for obvious reasons.

Then there's US 1999 her first.

AO 2007 with the dedication to Yetunde and coming back from an almost non-existent 2006 season.

US Open 2008 IMO is right up there too as it got her back the no.1 ranking for the first time in 5 years and was the start of this latest run of 4/6 slams won.

There's so many to choose from though, 12!!
Wasn't THAT long ago when she was still on 8.

Re: Serena def Justine: The most meaningful major win of Serena's career?

no one doubts serena anymore. but she will continue to amaze. I do think this was a meaningful major just because of the us open tirade. the most meaningful was the ao 07.

Serena Williams -21 Time Major Champion
Venus Williams - 7 Time Major Champion

AO07 is the most meaningful because it sums up her career trademark: her mental toughness.

Re: Serena def Justine: The most meaningful major win of Serena's career?

It meant so much to Serena that she played lights out tennis.

Even in this final, Serena only went up to 60% whereas her final against Maria in 2007 was just devastating. This one was kinda lame.

Re: Serena def Justine: The most meaningful major win of Serena's career?

I think the fans are making it that way just because of Justine. Serena had the Serena slam, and her comeback win which was dedicated to Yetunde. So no, this was not the most significant.

The Williams Sisters

It's great to be a fan of the two most talented women in tennis.

Only IDIOTS count out the Williams sisters!!!
Serena: 13 Slams, ranked: #1
Venus: 7 Slams, ranked: #2

Not even close. Given where she was mentally AO '07 was key.

Someone is quietly turning back the clock...to them bulldozer dayz...

Always on the lookout for a great tennis match.
