So much for her being unfit.....

Serena played more than twice the amount of tennis Justine did, and it was Justine that looked tired. Fitness is not dependant on how skinny you appear......

Imagine if Justine also played doubles, she would not be half the player she is today.

I am not conceited, I am just convinced

Re: So much for her being unfit.....

I don't think either looked tired. Serena's movement was questionable at times, I'm really surprised Justine didn't press her into the backhand corner, seemed like Serena didn't want to put a lot of weight on that strained thigh...

Point taken though. People who say Serena is 'unfit' are just insane. Last time I remember Serena flat out losing a match due to fitness, was off the top of my head, the match against Mauresmo in the 4th round US open 2006....possibly fitness was an issue (I know movement was) against Henin the following year at the US OPEN. Even then, people could argue that.

Serena is fit as a fiddle, minus the injuries. In sweltering heat like at the AO, you don't win 5 titles, unless you have the fitness.

I think with her serve and her athleticism, her power, her court mobility, I just think when she’s on, she’s the greatest player we’ve ever seen, ever. Now, whether her record is the greatest remains to be seen because she hasn’t retired yet. But I think she is really the greatest player. I have seen Martina and Steffi at their best. There are little chinks in those players’ armor, but it was a different era, where you didn’t need to be the perfect player.

Re: So much for her being unfit.....

Serena played the most tennis in the last 3 weeks and won 2 GS titles.

That is really phenomenal!

Btw I still believe she's not 100% fit!

Re: So much for her being unfit.....

Justine's stamina is not quite there after only two tourneys.

Serena is definitely in good shape, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have an ache or two.

She won and that's all that matters. And the Steffica's and LDV's of the world, can cry us a river.

Re: So much for her being unfit.....

Frankly, playing every day took a toll on her and it started showing in Azarenka match.
It got worse in Na Li match and the double final.

So just because she won, does not mean fitness is overrated.

i don't agree. juju didn't look tired at all. a lil nervous at times but not tired. juju doesn't play dbls much cause she's vulnerable to injuries and that goes back to her jr days. serena was too good in the third set but juju did have her chances.

Who is more susceptable to injuries than Serena Willaims. However, she goes out there and takes her licks and more often than not she is succesful. Justine does not play doubles because her fitness in later rounds of tournaments would be compromised.

Justine's training days are more intense than some doubles hit & giggle.

This is ABSOLUTELY correct.

Serena is in better cardiovascular shape than Juju. You could see it in the third. It was clear as day.

This should be a lesson for Steffica Gereles, too.

Re: So much for her being unfit.....

ITA with the OP.

Some people in the results thread were saying Serena was even more tired than Henin because of the doubles but that's not what I saw. I think Serena could have played all day if she had to, she's in such amazing shape. So great to see.

To be fair though, Justine does have that blood virus which is why it would just be impossible for her to play doubles. I think her fitness is fine.
