Serena Williams def Justine Henin: 6-4, 3-6, 6-2
Loved it. Lots of tension. Unique set of circumstances contributed to that.
It was just a question of Serena keeping her level up (and moving her feet). She's developed an assortment of weapons, and was actually playing the stronger, more controlled, mid-percentage aggressive game. Henin's strategy was quite high risk. Great when it worked during that span from the end of the 2nd set to the very beginning of the 3rd, but goodness: even Steffi or Roger couldn't keep that up. Especially against a quality opponent that began to move her feet again and hit with conviction.
A good preview of what we hope to get this season. Both, hopefully, will get used to playing each other in GS finals.
PS: The only consistently poor performance of the day was Mary Carillo's. Once Serena started to get a hold of that 3rd set, she started babbling like a nervous grad student: "Serena should play with more passion, like this, more often. She should care more about the other tournaments. This is the reason she is not ranked #1."
ESPN post-match courtside interview:
(a) tough to play again against Justine, she plays uniquely and very well
(b) on 3rd set, yeah I just had to "man up"
(c) started serving a little bit better, I mean, I almost hit her once with one of my serves (laugh)
(d) so cool to tie BJK, to even be mentioned in the same breath with her, now focused on doing some of what she did off the court!
Someone is quietly turning back the clock...to them bulldozer dayz...
Always on the lookout for a great tennis match.
