Most Hyped Up Match Of All Time

Discuss.

(I was thinking of including female players only, so "Battle of the Sexes" is sort of a category fraud... but it did involve a female player.
If you pick that one, post a match-up between two female tennis players.

E.g. 2004 Guangzhou final - Li vs Sucha - First WTA title for the Golden Flowers
or 2008 Olympics final - Demented vs Sanowa - who will win a title that actually matters?)

P.S. This entry is wrong "1988 USO final - Graf vs Sabatini (going for the Golden Slam)"
The Olympics were held after the USO, so Steffi was only completing the calendar slam by winning this match.

Serena vs. Henin 2010 AO Open final... I have a feeling it will be one-sided.

Most hyped? No.

Most overhyped? Possibly. For some reason, I'm very certain this will be a straightset win by Serena and it won't be pretty.

However, hope I'm wrong.

I always wanted to be somebody. If I made it, it's half because I was game enough to take a lot of punishment along the way and half because there were a lot of people who cared enough to help me.

Depends on Serena's first serve percentage. Henin's been struggling to return big first serves the entire fortnight. SHould Serena's % drop into the low-mid 50's, then it'll be a close match I predict.

With that said, this match isn't that hyped at all to me. If this were ANY other major than the AO it would be, but at least in the US, no one seems to care, especially since it's not going to be on network TV.

Re: Most Hyped Up Match Of All Time

Well, contrary to popular belief, I wasn't actually around for the Lenglen/Wills match up.

But the whole King/Riggs match was so much bigger than the sport itself...it really did somehow become a referendum on the whole women's rights movement, the relative success of which is why his earlier dismantling of Margaret Court is pretty much forgotten. It was a symbolic moment, a carnival sideshow that did, in a very real and tangible way, crystalize and symbolize the very real events of the slow progression of women's rights over much of the first half of the century. Rightly or wrongly, it transcended the world of tennis, even the world of sports, in a way none of the other matches listed ever could. I mean I remember to listen to the way some people on both sides of the issue talked if Riggs won, women were going to have to quit their jobs and give up their right to vote. It was crazy in a way only the overheated rhetoric of the '60s could have been.

I agree. No one in the US seems to be talking about it.. but there is a lot going on with other sports. NBA all-star game, NFL playoffs, probowl, College basketball, college football, etc.

Even if Serena is struggling with serve % though her second serve is extremely formidable and Henin has been struggling with all parts of her game. Watching her, you can tell she's back mentally but she's still in the midst of trying to retool her game.. and the serve especially has been really off. Can Henin pull it together for the final? Of course, but I think the only reliable part of either player's game is that Serena's serve and return will be extremely difficult to counter and that alone is enough for me to think it will be a straights set win.

I hope I'm wrong though.

Re: Most Hyped Up Match Of All Time

And I think once you put this match next to those others in the poll, I dont think it can compare really.
We're just so excited as tennis fantatics to finally have a final that MIGHT be really good.

Re: Most Hyped Up Match Of All Time

BJK vs. Riggs for sure everyone at the time, even if they didn't follow tennis, knew about this match.

and the others have all been hyped up too. Another I would add to the list is 1995 USO final Graf vs. the returning Seles, who was destroying opponents left and right. She won the Canadian Open in her 1st tournament back and didn't lose a set until her 3 set loss to Graf in the USO final.

Why wasn't there as much hype for the match with Court?

Court wasn't at all part of the WTA feminist movement in the early 70's. She said something along the lines of 'i'm quite happy to let my husband wear the trousers'.

King was playing for something bigger than herself.

My goodness, you practically wrote a complete article without mentioning "The Demented One" even once.

Re: Most Hyped Up Match Of All Time

Evert and Navratilova met 80 times (hard to believe), mostly in the finals. So after a while you can't say that it's hyped, people get used to it.

Tonight is exciting for sure, but there's really nothing to contextualize it. So hopefully they both produce top tennis with justine winning.

Re: Most Hyped Up Match Of All Time

I'm only old enough to remember two of the options, but that first USO final between Venus and Serena was really hyped up. It was the first time the women's final was held in prime time. I remember everyone in my school was talking about it. However (especially for a New Yorker like myself), a lot of it was overshadowed by September 11th, which happened just days later.

You're absolutely right. That Seles/Graf match was the most anticipated match ever from what I remember - well ahead the Serena/Henin match.
