IVA MAJOLI played the most like Hingis imho.

She beat Hingis at her own game at the Roland Garros. This is my opinion, as I just don't see many players at all play the way Martina did.

Hurry Back Hingis, You're missed. I love tennis and I miss the way she moved and played the game.

She beat Martina because Hingis was slowed down by a back injury.

Even without the injury, Iva might have won a closer fought battle....Iva was exceptional that day, and is a natural on clay

Good luck to the Aussie and Balkan girls!

Majoli won because she outplayed Hingis that day.

And Majoli played absolutely nothing like Hingis.

Re: IVA MAJOLI played the most like Hingis imho.

Why this stuborn quest to find someone who plays like Hingis.

This is only one of many that have made such attempts.

Hingis is unique.
Her anticipiation, ability to force opponent to do what hey don't want to, her variety of shots, ability to change her mind in a split second.

It seems to me, the problem here is that, when making this comparison, people tend to remember the Hingis whi came from retirrment(Hings II), not the Hingis before(Hingis I).

Well, Hingis II is nothing like Hingis I.

Hingis II is an ordianary player.
Hingis I was a prodigy.

While Hingis II still the mind of Hingis I, she lacks the ability to execute what her minds tells her to do.

Majoli was a basher. If her style was similar to anyone, it was to Monica Seles (they both hit hard while also using angles well). I remember Chris Evert was commentating for a Graf-Majoli match, and she compared her to Seles saying, "It's like watching [Monica's] ghost play."

majoli would have beaten anyone that day. she played a simply amazing match. great serving, great forehand, awesome angles, great movement...she had everything going her way. it would have been more one-sided had it not taken her a million break chances to finally break hingis
don't think hingis even had a bp in that match

ugh, why do they all suck????????

Hmm no @thread title.

If anything Iva showed the path to others in how to overpower Hingis the whole match basically. She hit like 30 groundstroke winners (she had an ace serve and some volleys/overheads to boot as well) in that 6-4 6-2 win.

Re: IVA MAJOLI played the most like Hingis imho.

No similarities whatsoever.

Majoli was actually seen, at that time, as quite a power hitter. However, Iva was more of a ralllier. She'd attempt to wear her opponents down in long rallies before applying massive forehands into the corners.

Not Martina Hingis!

agreed, majoli reminded me of pierce on clay, who rallied more than on hardcourts but was still looking to strike away a winner on the forehand.

Iva would let the ball sit up and nail it.

A few times in that 1997 final Hingis screamed at Iva's bludgeoning forehands!
