Lol that's a good idea. The fact that I have a chance, even my 51 year old dad has a chance at the US Open. So funny

Re: USTA Sectional Playoff for the US Open

This is a dumb idea if you ask me. It's good in theory, but really it should be by invitation based on national, college, and junior rankings. The fact that anyone can participate is just a way for the USTA to earn money from the entry fees, and it's a waste of time for the players who are actually contenders for the wild cards.

Serena Williams ~ Maria Sharapova ~ Venus Williams ~ Jelena Dokic ~ Melanie Oudin ~ Christina McHale

Vandeweghe ~ Mattek-Sands ~ King ~ Hampton ~ Riske ~ Glatch ~ Brengle ~ Rogers ~ Stephens ~ Boserup ~ Davis ~ Keys ~ Lepchenko ~ Falconi ~ Chirico ~ Crawford ~ Gibbs ~ Pegula ~ Min ~ Townsend ~ Duval ~ Vickery ~ Bellis ~ Ahn

Yeah, money's the main priority, but it also lets people feel like they are involved.

Re: USTA Sectional Playoff for the US Open

well, they make a cool $512,000 from entry fees, plus of course any USTA memberships purchased for those who aren't members. I think it's cool (though expensive) just to say you played in it, even if you get killed. The eastern section one is actually played at the BJK National Tennis Center

The US Open golf major does a similar sort of thing. Everyday "jo blows" have the opportunity to qualify. I like this. It goes hand in hand with the American Dream, why not?

You know how people with no singing ability whatsoever show up to "American Idol" auditions just so they can get on TV for a few seconds? Well, the USTA set the entry fee at $125 to keep that from happening in this tournament.

Re: USTA Sectional Playoff for the US Open

As a 4.0 player, it would be foolish of me to even attempt this.
My tennis goal is to be a 5.0 by 2012, at which point it will still be foolish to attempt but slightly less so.
If this program is still alive, I will do it then.

Also, nobody wants to watch people sing at a tennis court.

Unfortunately, there will be some foolish 4.0 players in each section who will attempt it, as well as people my age (44) and older. As long as they have the money, the USTA does not care.

Re: USTA Sectional Playoff for the US Open

Look, as long as you don't mind shelling out the money and aren't delusional that you are going to win the thing as a rec player, what's the harm. You could end up drawing another rec player in the first round. Could be fun. Also, as far as the tournament itself goes, in order to win the sectional you need to win 8 rounds. Then in order to win the playoff, it's another 4 wins. So by the time you get the WC for USO qualies, you've won 12 rounds. You've got to be a pretty darn good player to do that
