Seriously, what's the deal with Mauresmo and Roland Garros?

Yes, I know Amelie has never been mentally the strongest and that she suffered from the pressures from the home crowd, and yes, I know clay wasn't the surface best suited to her game... but still, she really should've done far better than 2 QF's. Some of her losses at RG have been downright shocking. I dread to think what would've happened if she had the additional pressure of facing a fellow French player there... she'd most likely have found a way to lose to Suzanne Lenglen's exhumed remains.

So why exactly did she find it SO hard to cope with the pressure?

She just didn't have it mentally. As simple as that. She felt she had BIG shoes and expectations to fill. When she was playing her first few rounds she was probably already thinking and dreading about the second week. The press wasn't exactly nice about it either.
It took Mauresmo until 2006 to win slams. She just found it really difficult to cope.

And if your life were gold, how long do you think you'd stay living?

Re: Seriously, what's the deal with Mauresmo and Roland Garros?

Trying to win on your home slam's biggest court in front of your home crowd is rough for her. The French crowd is the only Slam crowd that doesn't seem to raise their players attitude, atleast for the women. Had the French Open not been in France (the clay slam somewhere else) Mauresmo would have won it no doubt in my mind.
But this is the slam Mauresmo went to as a child and it would probably mean a lot for her to win, but she just puts too much pressure on herself to try to do well. Which is weird because Paris indoors she does great in and then she goes and plays the Big One in Paris on clay and just fails miserably.

Re: Seriously, what's the deal with Mauresmo and Roland Garros?

I'm wondering if any other retired former world #1 (assuming Mauresmo is about to retire) has had such a poor record at one of the Slams. I'm pretty sure most would've made the semis at each Slam at least once. I know that, of active players, Ivanovic and Jankovic haven't done it yet, but I can't think of any former world #1s who've retired who didn't manage it. I'm probably forgetting someone obvious though... haha.

Obviously Hingis had a fantastic record at RG but still, she should have won it and I think in her case it was also a mental let down...it is definitely the most grueling slam mentally and physically.

Momo should have won RG, or at least made the finals. She had a fantastic game for clay...

Venus Ana Caro Sloane
Timea Aga Masha Bencic Kristyna Keys Dani
Sania Vika Nicole Petko Simona Broady Robi CiCi Mladenovic Garcia JJ Errani Duval

Martina Hingis Forever!!!

Oh well, tennis is 90% mental. Momo is extra sensitive.
