some interesting info for 2010 season
0.There will be a net gain of 106 new playing opportunities in 2010: 120 new playing opportunities and 14 new Byes .- 2 new International tournaments:
o Kuala Lumpur and Copenhagen – weeks # 9 & 32
- Qualifying draw sizes:
o Increases at Cincinnati (48) and Montreal (64) – weeks # 33 & 34
o Decrease at Pattaya (16) – week # 7
- There will be two (2) Byes in most Premier 600 & 700’s
o 600’s: Warsaw, New Haven, Moscow
o 700’s: Paris, Stuttgart, Stanford, San Diego*
o Sydney and Eastbourne will receive 2 Byes each provided Sydney Qualifying is increased to 48 and for Eastbourne, provided a new event is added in Week 24 opposite Birmingham – To be determined.
*(Los Angeles moves to San Diego in 2010. Copenhagen will be opposite San Diego, therefore San Diego will reduce from 56 in 2009 to a 30 main in 2010).
2. Elimination of ITF Feed-Up System: In 2010, the ITF Feed-up system will be eliminated. This will allow for 1 or 2 more direct acceptance spots at the entry deadline in select International tournaments.
1. Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Board Approved 2010 Roadmap Changes:
a. Top 10 Wild Card Eligibility - Will be expanded to include year-end top 20 ranked players.
b. Ranking Requirements – Premier 5’s: If players ranked 11 – 20 in the 2009 Year End rankings and play Premier 5’s, they must count two 2 of them in their Best 16 results.
c. Top 6 Premier 700 Entry System – Will remain unchanged, assuring that Top 6 Players will not be denied entry into their two Premier 700 Commitment Tournaments. However, the Top 10 List order will be used and the Marquee List will be eliminated.
d. Top 10 Medical Withdrawals - Top 10 Players will be allowed to utilize their annual medical withdrawals for their Premier 700 Commitment Tournaments.
e. Long Term Injury Zero Pointers – For a Top 10 Player who is out of competition under the Long Term Injury rule, no more than three (3) zero point penalties will count on her ranking due to missed Commitment Tournaments during such absence, with the exception that all Mandatory Tournaments (Grand Slams, Premier Mandatory and Championships) zero point penalties must count on a Top 10 Player’s ranking (same is applied to all players).
f. Top 10 Players Long Term Injury Additional Entries - Players incurring a Long Term Injury may appeal to the Tour to play additional Premier 700 and International Tournaments, without being excluded due to the Prize Money Policy.
g. Premier 5 Ranking Points – Winner’s ranking points will be increased to 900 and remaining rounds increased consistent with current scale.
