Todd Goldman Trashes Serena Williams In His Magazine

Todd Goldman is the Publisher & Editor In Chief for TennisLife Magazine.

As a tennis fan, I look foward to all the latest tennis magazines that are published monthly.

This month however, there is a fire brewing inside of me as I read this article he wrote about Serena Williams.

Enjoy.

Revealing True Nature

Todd Goldman

It has been said many different ways, but no matter how you put it: When the chips are down, that is clearly when true character is revealed. Nobody has shown this more frequently or on as large of a stage recently as Serena Williams.

While some may want to give her the benefit of the doubt or just write off what happened at this year's US Open as an anomaly or as a competitor who was "in the heat of battle," those people have lost the plot.

Serena has never been a gracious loser. Her bad behavior during her semifinal at this year's Open was not the first time she has shown her nasty and disrespectful side. But there was something different about this year's Open that is a new low even for Serena. I believe her abuse and threatening of the official was completely calculated. She knew she was about to lose, that Kim Clijsters had outplayed her, and insteadof giving her opponent the stage, she stole the moment from Kim, the fans and the tennis world. Think about it-in the week after the Open, what were people talking about more: Clijsters' win, or Williams' meltdown?

This should have been a wonderful moment for tennis fans to embrace-Kim Clijsters, one of this sport's most amazing and gracious competitors, coming back to tennis and running through the US Open draw in just her third tournament-and Serena knew exactly what would happen when she threatened the lineswoman, and she got exactly what she wanted. Now, she can say she didn't "lose" the match, but that it was taken from her.

There's no question that the Williams sisters have done amazing things for tennis-challenging the conventions in the sport, dominating the pro game, and playing aggresive and exciting tennis. But like all things that are popular, something else will always come along and replace them. At this year's Open, there clearly was a change, as Melanie Oudin, Caroline Wozniacki and Kim Clijsters all became fan favorites. When Clijsters played Venus earlier in the tournament, the mostly American crowd was clearly rooting for the Belgian, and when she won, the sound was deafening.

But now fast forward to Saturday night after the Serena-Clijsters semi. At the post-match press conference Williams was flippant and unapologetic, and even 24 hours later she put out a statement with an explanation about the situation, but that lacked an apology. It wasn't until two days after the incident-and no doubt prompted by agents, lawyers, sponsors and probably many others-that she actually issued a statement of apology to the lineswoman, to Clijsters and to the fans.

At this year's Open, Serena showed the tennis world what she is all about: selfish, arrogant, disrespectful and unapologetic. No matter how much of a competitor you are (and I live in a household full of them), revealing a poor character will, in the end, be remembered much longer than who won the match.

PS: And to John McEnroe: You were guilty of far more than this during your playing days, so maybe that is why you are cutting Serena some slack here. But when it comes to calling foot faults, you are way off base. You, and a few other former pros (to be fair), have repeatedlt said foot faults shouldn't be called on critical points. that's just stupid. it's a rule for everybody and for every point-if someone steps on or over that line, it's a fault. When would you call a foot fault, when they are 4 feet inside the line? John, you cannot be serious.

Well, this magazine was just released because I just got it in the mail. So I WOULD like to move on, but it's people like this, _______ America (you fill in the blank), who is keeping the heat on Serena, where it doesn't belong.

He is completely out of line with this article

Re: Todd Goldman of Tennis Life throws Serena under the Bus

I said this as soon as it happened. It was a ready made excuse for her--default herself out of a match she was losing to stroke her ego. Not only that, despite losing, she managed to obnoxiously make herself the center of attention anyway. I've seen nothing in her reactions that changes that opinion. And moreover, there's no doubt she was coerced into making a second statement. That sure as hell didn't come of her own accord.

Goldman is spot on. Good for him.

Bullshit.

Look at Serena's "match point down" history alone and you know that this is bullshit.

Look at Serena's "match point down" history against Kim alone and you know that this is bullshit.

Done.

So we're supposed to believe that Serena knew in advance that when she was two points from defeat, she would get a controversial lines call, and then she purposely received a point penalty just to "steal" Kim's moment? Maybe it's all just one big conspiracy and Serena actually planted the lineswoman to make that call.

This Todd Goldman guy is a complete tool.

i stopped reading at the calculated comment, the match was in the balance at that point, she was only a 2 or 3 points from being level in the set.

I can read different opinions and accept them as long as they have good justifications. Your post however, was completely biased and so just plain stupid. Do you even know who serena williams is? At the aussie open in 2003, serena was down 1-5 to kim in the third, how did she react? Not to mention the countless other times she came back from matches, including match point down against dementieva this year (at the same stage in a slam). She didn't make herself the centre of attention, idiots like you make her the centre of attention.

Won't even bother reading the article..just a waste of time, the whole insulting serena thing is getting old. She doesn't give a shit about these idiots that write about her, neither do I anymore.

S.V W 4 EVER

Welcome Back Kimmy!
