Names of Cities on Courts

This is a totally random thread that I thought I'd start after watching Moscow and noticing the 'Moscow' which is printed onto the court surface behind the baseline. Obviously I've noticed this before, as it is done at a number of hardcourt tournaments. I was just wondering if there is any history behind this tradition, and why it is done in the first place.

Also, the names on the courts can provide some great pictures of players, whether only part of the name is caught in the photo (I seem to recall a pic of Sharapova in Melbourne standing over the word 'ME' ), or the whole name. Feel free to post any of these if you can think of some nice ones.

Beijing, Cincy, Toronto...loads of tourneys do it now.

Another Australian initiative

Dulgheru // Gajdosova// Kanepi // Cetkovska // Svitolina // Niculescu // Errani

Promote the city as a tourist destination because it will be televised. That's why it's only on Centre Court almost all the time.

And if your life were gold, how long do you think you'd stay living?

That's what I was thinking also. Dunno about the tourist destination part though, I was thinking that it was just so that people watching had the name of the city in their mind and knew almost instantly where the tennis was being played.

I don't remember Estoril doing it. and Estoril is a neighborhood (as translated by google) within the county of Oeiras, not Lisbon
