Players and surgeries

Can you remember any players who had surgeries and how did it affect their careers?
I know one - Mauresmo and it didn't finish well.

(I am writing as Aga will have a surgery because of her serious hand injury)

Re: Players and surgeries

Kim had wrist surgery in 2004. ( to repair torn tendon and remove cyst in left wrist)

She first came back in Hasselt and re-injured herself, but after a new time off, she had the best year of her carreer (the first one ) winning first Indian Wells & Miami back to back and then had an amazing american summer winning Stanford (d. V.Williams in final), Los Angeles, Toronto (d. Henin in final), US Open, Luxembourg and Hasselt !

Re: Players and surgeries

Maria seems to have come back strong after her injury, but the jury is still out on this one. We'll see how she does once she plays a full season.

Other players like Haas (I know he's a guy, but oh well...) keep on struggling with the same injuries over and over again and need to have several surgeries, but with only a short period of time where everything is OK, before it's re-injured.

Re: Players and surgeries

Justine had a knee and eyes surgeries during her retirement (I really think that's why she actually retired, but we will never know the truth), we will see if her knee healed completely by next January.

Re: Players and surgeries

Serena Williams had a knee injury in end of 2003, came very rusty after more than 6 months and never had the same movement.

Re: Players and surgeries

Steffi Graf was the queen of surgeries 2 knee surgeries being the most serious, she also had various other ones to remove bone fragments from her wrist and foot and also had a bone spur at the base of her spine which she chose not to have an operation on this however led to her having a pretty bad back and at times she couldn't even get out of bed to practise due to serious back spasms. I don't know exactly how many surgeries Graf had over her career but I'd imagine it was over a dozen.

RIP Elena Baltacha, thank you for dedicating your life to a sport we all love. You'll be missed but never forgotten.

Venus in 2006 may have had left wrist surgery, I know she when she came back denied it, but not sure if she admitted to it.
