Beijing was hard court. London will be grass, so it only makes sense that Rio is on clay.
Everyone is mentioning how Rio will effect the summer hard court schedule if it is on clay but noone is remarking on how London will do the same.
It's easier to go from hard courts to clay than grass to hard courts and back to grass.
For years most of the top players who played Miami, then proceeded to play well a week and in some cases less than a week later on the green clay at Amelia Island.
In fact earlier this decade there was still many summer clay court tournis on the WTA tour.
There are not as many now but they still play a role on the rankings.
But does anyone remember a time when Wimbledon was played then part of the hard court season was and then a month later right back to grass then back to hard courts?
It's never happened before!!!
The Wta is going to likely have to give players a choice in 2012 by upgrading Newport, RI.
In the case of the men, the ATP seems prepared for anything.
They have bigger clay tourni that stay around until just around the beginning of August.
They have a tourni on grass after Wimbledon with Newport.
They have the hard court season with the US Open Series.
