Former No. 1 Hingis rules out comeback to tennis

4 hours, 16 minutes ago

PARIS (AP)—Former No. 1 Martina Hingis won’t make a comeback to competitive tennis.

The 29-year old Hingis, who retired after getting a two-year ban in 2007 for testing positive for cocaine, said Tuesday in an interview with L’Equipe that she is happy with her new life.

“I’ve got a nice house, my four horses,” Hingis said. “On the tour, I had no life.”

Hingis added that even without being tested positive, she likely would have retired.

“If I had won the four Grand Slam tournaments, maybe I would have continued,” she said. “But I was on downslope. And I was suspended for two years, and that was it.”

Hingis, who spent 209 weeks at No. 1 in the women’s rankings and won five Grand Slam singles titles, said she went through hard times during her suspension.

“I didn’t have the right to play any competition, even in another Olympic sport,” she said. “I didn’t have the right to feature in equestrian competition, even at an amateur level. … I’m not sure I have completely recovered.”

Hingis added that she learned that her suspension was over on Sept. 30—her birthday—a few days after undergoing a doping test at her home.

“They thought maybe, like you, that I was planning a second comeback,” she said.

Hingis quit tennis for the first time in 2002 because of foot and leg injuries. When she returned to the circuit in 2006, Hingis reached two Grand Slam quarterfinals, won two smaller tournaments and finished the year ranked No. 7.

Sad, but I think everyone knew in their hearts that we'd seen the last of her.

Why should she bother to comeback? Comebacks are hard work, training and discipline. Martina is enjoying her life after retirement too much for that.

She also "enjoyed" her 1st retirement. Martina's competitive, she needs challenge in her life. Because she couldn't compete in any sport, she competed on TV. Face Martina, please come back.

Martina Hingis 4ever!!!

Now and forever, I'll remember.

Sad, but expected

I always wanted to be somebody. If I made it, it's half because I was game enough to take a lot of punishment along the way and half because there were a lot of people who cared enough to help me.

Who was expecting her to come back?

For Dante, it follows then, that the only way to get into Hell is to insist upon it. One must deliberately exclude himself from grace by hardening his heart against it. Hell is what the damned have actively and insistently wished for.

The man that hath no music in himself, nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds is fit for treasons, stratagems and spoils. The motions of his spirit are dull as night and his affections dark as Erebus. Let no such man be trusted. Shakespeare

If she can't do herself justice it's best that she doesn't come back. Martina herself probably feels the same way. Having said that, I think she could still do some serious damage in doubles and I would be delighted to see her play again.

And let's not forget that they humiliated her with that suspension. They didn't show any respect for her and so I understand why she doesn't want to come back. it must have left a bad taste in her mouth, and if that is the thanks she got for her contribution to the game she must feel that they can stick it where the sun don't shine - and who can blame her?

Re: Hingis won't return to tennis-it's official

but seriously I don't think finesse would be a problem for any player to come back. Look at Kimiko. Winning a title at 39 yrs old? come on. I hope one day martina finds her life needs some excitement and announces comeback.

Really sad. It' s a shame how they destroyed her career.

I'm sorry, but I just don't believe Hingis wants to make the effort... If she really committed herself, she'd be right up there.
