I believe this is how its done for the ATP. As long as you are in the top 32 (maybe top 20?) and a defending slam champion, then you get the 8th spot. Is this how it works for the WTA as well?

I think the 8th spot may go to a WC & she stands a pretty good chance for one, if she should win a slam!

Rest in Peace Bally!

no, she has to qualify which wont happen...The issue came up in 2007 when Venus was 8th in the race and Dementieva maybe? was close to knocking her out, but Venus' ranking held up...but in the end she withdrew from the tourny anyways...

Actually if Kim wins the US Open she'll have a great chance of qualifying anyway as she's entered into Beijing. Another good run there and she could well find herself near the top 8 of the year. If she plays a full fall schedule she'll qualify but I dunno if she's willing to do that.

Most importantly, thanks to my family, especially my mom. You've been very supportive, encouraging, inspiring... you were always there for me. It was a long way and we did it together. I love you mom. It's so emotional. It's so hard to say goodbye. I'm going to miss you so much"

Kim will still be a decent margin out of the 8th spot behind Jankovic, Zvonareva, and Pennetta. She'll need another great result (which is obviously likely) at Beijing. I'm not even sure Beijing is enough to qualify. She'll need to enter Moscow or Tokyo.

No, I don't think she can get up to #8. She'll be #19 if she wins, but still a few thousand points away from #8.

shed have to be perfect...Maria who was already at 1700 before the tourny began still would have needed luck if she won. Caroline was one of the people in reach, but with her making the final the top 8 is almost secure...

Clijsters will play Luxembourg too (and will win of course)

Kim will probably qualify for Bali anyway

Luxembourg is worth 280 at most -- peanuts.

If (when) she wins Luxembourg, she qualifies for Bali.

Re: Does Clijsters get the 8th spot for the YEC if she wins?

She'll have 2310 points if she wins US Open. She's committed to playing Beijing (gives 1000 points to the champion) and Luxembourg (280 points). So, she can get up to 3590. The current number #8 in the Race after US Open will be Zvonareva, with 3302. Therefore, the chances that Clijsters will qualify are very slim, but I think they may give the the WC if she wins US Open and does well in Beijing, since she has just come back to play, so she has an "excuse" for not qualifying by total points alone.

Go Brazilian girls!

Re: Does Clijsters get the 8th spot for the YEC if she wins?

She won't make it. I think she'll choose to play a limited fall schedule. I don't see her play more than 2 events besides Luxemburg and Beijing.

Anyway, I think the ATP rules are way more logical here. In the 11 matches she's won so far, Kim has beaten like 8 top-20 players and 3 top-10 players. She's only lost to #1 and #4. I actually can't think of a player who is more deserving of playing among the best 8 women on the planet at this moment, especially if she were to beat Caroline tonight.

Re: Does Clijsters get the 8th spot for the YEC if she wins?

Oh, and the ATP rule states that the #8 spot can be given to someone who has won a Grand Slam and is in the Top 20 (but not Top 8), but that rule doesn't exist for the women. However, the WTA states that only the top 7 are guarenteed in the YEC. The #8 spot can be given to any player at their sole discretion.

Go Brazilian girls!

I honestly think she doesn't want to play the YEC. I don't think she's looking for too much tennis and obligations in her 'second' career.

Allez.

New Race List: Caroline should be 99% sure IN YEC.

1 Safina, Dinara RUS 7492 15 160

3 Wozniacki, Caroline DEN 5640 20 1400

4 Dementieva, Elena RUS 5325 16 100
5 Kuznetsova, Svetlana RUS 4493 15 280
6 Williams, Venus USA 4036 13 280
7 Azarenka, Victoria BLR 4011 13 160
8 Zvonareva, Vera RUS 3302 16 280
9 Pennetta, Flavia ITA 3120 20 500
10 Jankovic, Jelena SRB 3011 15 100
11 Stosur, Samantha AUS 2533 16 100
12 Bartoli, Marion FRA 2491 19 100
13 Radwanska, Agnieszka POL 2360 18 100
14 Razzano, Virginie FRA 2297 18 5
15 Ivanovic, Ana SRB 2061 13 5
16 Mauresmo, Amelie FRA 1977 12 100
17 Cibulkova, Dominika SVK 1860 17 0
18 Vesnina, Elena RUS 1739 17 160
19 Hantuchova, Daniela SVK 1725 19 280
20 Sharapova, Maria RUS 1720 13 160

Not all players low points are added.

Points from TPPO, China and Moscow = 2270 One player may win all 3 Premier tournaments, but with more winners all can't reach Caro's points level.

So far they have never given out a Wildcard, last many years...
