Will Serena once again be at the forefront of ANOTHER Breakthrough in Tennis?

After the events of 2004 US Open against JCAP, hawk eye was born.

Is there demand for hawk eye for foot faults?

It's barely ever called anywhere else

Re: Will Serena once again be at the forefront of ANOTHER Breakthrough in Tennis?

That would be interesting but I don't think it proves that foot faults are that big of a factor in matches. Just one idiot lines person and a call at the wrong time.

With this incident, I think that Serena's outburst overshadowed the inappropriate call and Kim's incredible performance.

The Williams Sisters

It's great to be a fan of the two most talented women in tennis.

Only IDIOTS count out the Williams sisters!!!
Serena: 13 Slams, ranked: #1
Venus: 7 Slams, ranked: #2

I think we shouldnt have linesmen at all
We should develope hawkeye for foofaults and out balls.
If the ball is out.A system makes a sound to hear.
So both players can relax and play tennis without worrying anything like human errors.

Yes, once they determine that it wasn't a footfault.

Re: Will Serena once again be at the forefront of ANOTHER Breakthrough in Tennis?

The hawkeye technology predates that match by several years and instant replay systems(eg. MacCam) go back even further. Furthermore, I am pretty sure I can dig up articles on the issue of using instant replay in tennis years back into the 90s. Whether it is going to be implemented for foot faults or not I don't know. This incident will certainly pressure the ITF and the WTA/ATP to consider doing it.

The general trend in Tennis has been towards eliminating the human element to judging line calls. Going back to the 70s they started using the Cyclops for calling the back service line although due to reliability issues it wasn't always much better the human judges. Watching the old Connors-Krickstein match you see a netcord judge at the net, which has largely been replaced by an electronic sensor attached to the net to detect vibrations. I think it is only a matter of time before most if not all line calls are primary done via electronic means. That being said the ITF and the ATP/WTA are probably going to have various meeting to consider the issue and of course study the reliability of any equipment. That being said due to the costs involved I could only realistically see such equipment being used on the show courts of major tournaments(eg. Arthur Ashe @ the US Open) because in the short term it is probably far cheaper to stick with linespeople.

For perspective instant replay didn't appear in tennis until 2006 and the 2006 US Open was the first to use Hawkeye. We might see some type of electronic system used for foot faults come the 2011 US Open, but don't count on it showing up in the 2010 US Open.

That being said I think that foot faults are such a minor part of the game that I don't see it as big of an issue as to the penalty system for unsportsmanlike conduct. Should players be fined for it? Sure. It is just like ditching a scheduled press conference for no reason, but I wonder whether the tour may question the rationale of having unsportsmanlike conduct help determine a match. Clijsters likely would have won the match considering that she was up a set and had two match points, but for the sake of the fans I am sure plenty of people would prefer not to have the doubt that Williams could have clawed her way back into the match. While it is extremely rare it isn't unheard of for a player to have a match point or two and manage to fritter away the match even if they are up a set. I can think of Hingis rallying to beat Serena at the 2001 Australian as a good example. Just because one appears to have the other player on the ropes doesn't mean you can run the clock down. You have to close it out.

Raise the bar, raise the interest, raise the prize money, raise the level of technology. Too awesome I think something needs to be done.

I see aroudn 2020 no more people on court, just AI system with 99% accuracy. (in fact they can already make hawk eye work automaticaly, with beeping balls out).

As soon as I saw this happen, I immediately thought: Hawkeye will be used to challenge foot faults.

Say whatever you want about Serena's outburst and how she acted unprofessionally -- it was not a foot fault.

Re: Will Serena once again be at the forefront of ANOTHER Breakthrough in Tennis?

No the foot fault rule will not change because of Serena.

Venus had 10 foot fault calls against her and so did other players.

Maria had double faults against her because of her shoulder and the double fault rule isn't gonna change because of that.

It doesn't matter if the call was on the first or the last point, the bottom line is that the judge was doing her job.

Serena lost it and the chair umpire made the correct call.

It's not the end of USO grand slams for SErena and she will win many many more. She just won't win the USO this year.

No biggy, she just has to move on to the next tournament like Maria, Ana, Dinara, Venus, Jelena, Elena, Kutzy, Amelie and all the other players.

IMO thats WHY footfaults should be added to the challenge system... It seem like they increased 10 fold this tournament...
