2003-2005 Kim vs. 2009 Kim

Who is better?

I think 2009 Kim is very good, but still a few notches away from her 2003-2005 form.

2009 Kim is mentally stronger.

I second that. Yesterday's match was in every way a demonstration of Kim at her best level. IMO she's already back to her 2003-2005 level, with added agressivity and mental strength.

I see this as well. Kim tweeted that this was the best match of her career. I am sad for her that it's so controversial.

But that can't be helped.

What I said in another thread:
USO SF: (WC) Kim Clijsters (BEL) def. (2) Serena Williams (USA) 6-4, 7-5

Kim used to be happy running around in the back and getting balls back with flashy splits even though she had the firepower. To make up for the decreased speed, she's developed a more positive court positioning, and she's not backing up that much even on the defense. Rather she takes the ball early. She can't do splits the way she did them, but this means that she's forced to be more efficient and smarter on the defense.

In short, I think Kim is still not at her peak, but I would not say she's "no where close", they way I would have just a few weeks ago. The improvements are her serve, court positioning, awareness and arguably her mental toughness. I expected her to collapse after failing to convert the break points at 4-3 (playing passively on the first 2 breakpoints, then with Serena serving some impressive aces), but she followed up with back to back love service games, capping each service game with an ace.

Her forehand is somewhat inconsistent when aggressing, and she took a more passive approach in the second set, but at least she understood her limitations and tried to maximise her strengths.

I do think however that, unlinke what you said, her stroke production is already right up there with her 2003-2005 level.

Yeah, mentally she seems much tougher. I think that's the most important difference, regardless of whether or not she is able to defend or hit as well as she did in '05.

Re: 2003-2005 Kim vs. 2009 Kim

Definitely being aggressive, really early in the rally. Her backhand CC has been a formidable shot this USO. She's been swiping everyone off the court with the width and heaviness of that shot.

Her aggressive nature was so much that she made Venus have to hit HUGE, just so she could contest equally. Venus really hits huge nowadays, but against Clijsters she had no choice.

Her forehand technique is still dubious though, but her serving has become a primary weapon, rather than secondary.

I hope Justine comes back just so that Kim can beat her in a slam.

It's ridiculously early to compare. Let her get a few more tourneys in.

You have to answer for Santino, Carlo.
