Will more legends of this generation leave a tarnished legacy?

Henin: the hand, retirement in AO final
Hingis: cocaine suspension
Serena: violent outburst at lineswoman

Three of the biggest names of this generation. Will Venus do something to tarnish her legacy? Sharapova? Is there a curse on this generation of WTA players?

No one talks about the hand except Serena stans. Henin's legacy is not tarnished. Serena has been too big of a name for too long for her legacy to be tarnished by this.

Serena, true to form, stole the show. Melanie who?

You don't close your eyes, even for a milli-second,
when Serena is backed into a corner and looking to bust out.

Henin's legacy is NOT tarnished! If anyone's tarnished, it's Martina H.

Serena - 21 Grand Slam Titles -- 69 Singles Titles -- World Rank: #1 | 2016 Record - (7-1) 88%
Venus - 7 Grand Slam Titles -- 49 Singles Titles -- World Rank: #11 | 2016 Record - (7-3) 70%

But she is not from this generation. Sharapova's probably too young still, but she's one of the few multi Slam winners we currently have.

The problem is players play tennis for themselves, not for u ,for me or for leaving a legacy to next generation.

I love the way everyone says Martina H is tarnished when her incident was an off court personal issue but a disrespectful player and a player's who sportsmanship is questioned get away scot free.

@ Graf, because she really controls her fans.
Seles should then be tarnished for abandoning her country mid way through her career.

I think for the top players, getting a place in the history books is definitely something important they want to achieve. It is up to them whether their page is decorated with flowers and love and kindness or marred with thorns, controversy and improper conduct.

God willing, Serena will play for some years and make these small incidents look like blips on her illustrious hall of fame career. Things always seem so magnified directly after. First reactions are the most harsh.

However, some good things that have happened here.

Re: Will more legends of this generation leave a tarnished legacy?

If anything that is tarnished it is the bad choices for umpires & lines judges throughout the years. The bad calls and poor decisions have really left their mark on the tennis world. If the umpire would have done their job during that hand episode with Henin it would have been a much better outcome. Even with the episode with Maria San Jose at the French Open this year the umpire still did not do their job and once more left a bad taste on the tennis world. With the Capriati episode the umpire made 4 horrible calls and the birth of the challenge system was given. One thing that I have noticed is that Serena tends to be at the end of a lot of unfair calls and poor decisions. But despite it all she still continues to give tennis her heart and determination with every match she is a great champion who will be remembered as just that a "Great Champion".

The episode last night was not fair because it did not look like a foot fault. I cannont think of anyone who would be happy when they are working their butt off only to have a crucial point stolen from them which eventually lead to Serena losing the match.

GOD IS REAL

I don't think those 3 players have tarnished anything. Controversy just adds to legacy as far as I am concerned and Martina, Justine, and Serena have nothing to prove to anyone.

Venus Ana Caro Sloane
Timea Aga Masha Bencic Kristyna Keys Dani
Sania Vika Nicole Petko Simona Broady Robi CiCi Mladenovic Garcia JJ Errani Duval

Martina Hingis Forever!!!

Re: Will more legends of this generation leave a tarnished legacy?

I think Elena Dementieva retiring without a Grand Slam title would be akin to departing with a tarnished reputation.
But I just know that she is not going to do that to me.

"And thanks to all the people around the world for supporting me, and my fan club, I could feel your support no matter where I was in the world. Thank you for your devotion. Most importantly, thanks to my family, especially my mom. You've been very supportive, encouraging, inspiring... you were always there for me. It was a long way and we did it together. I love you mom. It's so emotional. It's so hard to say goodbye. I'm going to miss you so much"
