Can anyone recall?

The last time a player was ranked in the top 20 with only 3 tournaments played?
Kim isn't there yet, but she's only a win away.

You have to answer for Santino, Carlo.

Re: Can anyone recall?

Monica back in 95? I know she had the protected co-No.1 thing, but even without it I'm pretty sure her first 3 tournaments back would've placed her in the top 20..

Jennifer Capriati?

If you're not paying for something, then you're the product.

Most definitely, LOL. Her first 3 tournaments back were a Tier I win, a GS Final, and a GS win.
This 2009 US Open has so much 1999 US Open deja vu for me. Me suddenly back into tennis after a long layoff, Kim appearing out of nowhere, Kim vs Serena, the match ending in a flameout, and most likely the winner of the match going on to take the title. Note that the last two things are opposite player from the previous time.

^ Actually, didn't Monica play (and win) Sydney in 96 before the AO? I'm assuimg Toronto win, US Open final and Sydney win would be enough to get her there.

I used to have this stuff memorized. My first instinct was that AO was her first tourney of 96 but I didn't check. You could be right.

Re: Can anyone recall?

I honestly can't. The closest I can think of is Capriati entering the rankings around No. 23 in 1990.

There are some players back in the early 80's who entered in the top 20, but you had to play more tournaments (six?) to get on the computer back then.

You are probably right, but just a footnote:

With her protected nr. 1 ranking, was Monica seeded No.1 in her comeback tournaments? In that case, I find Kim's comeback more impressive, as she had to start beating top players from the early rounds. But both up to now have been extremely impressive comebacks, probably the 2 most impressive in tennis.
