Wickmayer = next super star ?

The more I read articles and texts on Wickmayer the more I get the impression that she wants to conquer the world and I have the impression that she added a fan to her fan base (me).

I have seen her play several times and it is indeed true that she does not possess all of the technical skills needed for playing (top)tennis. Moreover she is a ball-basher (don't expect to see lots of drop shots when she is playing, ...). She is aware of this, but she thinks this is not that important (she already stated that she does not really want a coach that forces her to change her game). She has no b-plan. If she is not able to overpower her opponent she gets frustrated and starts to swear at no end.

Not very convincing arguments to support my claim in the thread title ?

BUT there are some arguments routing for her, namely her athletic abilities and her desire to become the best (VERY ambitious).

She has a better body than Kim and Serena. She can endure a lot more training than all of the players on the WTA tour (even more than Sciavone and Stosur)

Justine knew that she got blown off court by Kim, Serena and Venus, so she started training like mad, but Justine got sick after her training at Saddlebrook. Justine trained very hard but didn't have the body to cope with this (injuries, ...). The result was that she was forced to ...

Kim is more flexible, faster and more explosive and has more natural power than Wickmayer and Henin. Only Venus and Serena have greater natural gifts than Kim, but Kim didn't train a lot and thus she got injured quiet easily.

Wickmayer on the other hand is able to train VERY hard and she will do this year after year. She will become faster (why the hell she is not that fast I still can't understand, she has the legs of Graf), because she has the body to do so. She will become a lot more powerful due to her work in the fitness room (Kim refused to do this kind of training because she didn't want to look like a body builder ????). Her power, will power, stamina and endurance will start making the difference the next couple of years. She will start running everybody into the ground. (Wozniacki needs to watch out for the fitness and the power of Wickmayer- Oudin was spent, Wickmayer is still able to run a marathon).

The last couple of weeks Wickmayer has lost 3 very close matches against 3 top players (Kuznetsova, Dementieva and Zvonareva) because she is still not used to closing out matches against top players. The opponents had to fight like hell to beat Wickmayer. At the US Open I noticed that Wickmayer starts playing her best tennis at end of the match. That is not good news for the opponents. If she learns to play the big points, then I can promise you that she will be at least top 10 at the end of next year. Wickmayer is a real street fighter and could become a real star. If she is able to increase the speed and the accuracy (comes with training and experience) of her kick service (only S. Stosur has a similar kick service) I am convinced she will win almost all of her service games.

I have to say she has a lot of annoying traits as well (swearing, outbursts, fake serves, ...)

Re: Wickmayer = next super star ?

She's among the hardest workers, fittest and most determined players on the tour. But I don't think she's even close to becoming the next Henin. She doesn't have the intrinsical talent to become a true top-player (as in 'with a realistic chance to win every Slam she enters'). I don't think she'll ever be able to compensate for that, as hard as she might be willing to work. But if she continues the hard work, I do think she could work herself a way into the top-10, and at some point be a regular threat to make the 2nd week at Slams. I think that's the maximum she could reach. I'd love Yanina to prove me wrong though.

janput, you have an interesting point of view and made a reliable argumentation - really nice to read. Just hope everything gonna happen in described way. At this stage of her career the future looks bright and promising. And speed of progressing is very high, which is great but even a bit dangerous. We'll see, and hope for the best.

I was impressed with her in US open. She beats the ball hard and is very good physically. I really hope she has a great future and I think she is a good addition to WTA tour.

Re: Wickmayer = next super star ?

i think this us open will be just a flash in the pan for her. her game just isn't good enough (she will get beat 6-3, 6-2 by caro) and she will be back to struggling for main tour wins again after it.

Re: Wickmayer = next super star ?

Hm, she may become a top 10 player if she keeps her act together, but that's the max she can do. It would be awesome of she did that though. But with a good run in the Australian tour and all who knows.

I'm all alone with my delusions

Re: Wickmayer = next super star ?

Too soon to tell. She came through a pitiful draw and didn't really beat anybody to get here--this really just proves she's the least scrubbish of a bunch of scrubs.

Of course, there are other players who have used a soft draw as a launch pad for greatness. And others who have made one semi and then disappeared forever.

The OP obviously has followed her more closely than me, and it sounds like she has some potential. But ALL the women who make it this far have lots of raw talent. Taking it to that next level is 10,000 times harder. We'll see. She has a nice story and even if she has a temper sometimes, I don't mind a little personality and emotion. At the very least, like you say, she's on people's radar now and is probably worth keeping an eye on.

Re: Wickmayer = next super star ?

Wickmayer is a decent player, I am sure she will be around in the top 20 for a while, maybe even establish herself in the top 10. But superstar? I dont think so.
