Re: Extremely interesting article of Wickmayer dad on the WTATOUR & Yanina
INTERVIEW — NEW YORK - MARC WICKMAYER, DAD AMONG THE TENNIS DADS 'Without my dad, I wouldn’t have been here today. He sacrificed his life for me. He's a great guy', Yanina Wickmayer told during her press conference and the room became silent. Marc Wickmayer has un unbreakable bond with his daughter after the death of his wife.
This is not unexpected, Yanina keeps repeating. Not for you either?
'I won’t deny I was not expecting the semi final, but I did expect a good tournament. At Roland Garros she very nearly beat Stosur who then went on to play the semi-finals. (note Belzebub true she squandered 10 out of 11 break points in that very close three-set match) Right then it was clear that Yanina was very strong, except for one detail that Yanina was not taking seriously'
'The mental part. She has got a mortal weapon, her backhand. She has got super legs. But I always say: it is the head that makes the legs move. Well, she has that head now.'
Semi-final, 21st on the ranking, it is going really fast now?
'And she wants more than top-20. When she will come home, she is bent on training like never before. Number 1 will never be her share, but top-10, who knows? And it can go very fast on a Grand Slam tourney. If she wins, she is #16. To achieve that, you need to be half a year on the Tour.'
Strong, but she was fortunate: She is in that upper half where all the seeds faltered.
'She played a three-setter in Birmingham against Sharapova. Who says that Yanina couldn’t beat her here? Kuznetsova she could surely handle.'
The Williams-sisters are in the other half?
'I see Venus during training. She is not a 100%. All these big girls start realizing that their technique is no longer suffcient. They need to be physically sharp as well'
'I see a lot of girls here that don’t have the body of a top sportswoman. They are six, seven kilos overweight. I see what they eat. Yanina never eats that. Right there at the table, is the explanation why they went out this early. De girls who were among the last 16 were exactly the same 16 we saw in the gym every day. That is not a coincidence.'
Yanina thanked you explicitly during the press conference, the whole room was moved but the both of you did not shed a tear?
'We lived through so many things. Yanina has become hard as rock'
Another remarkable quote of the press conference “Sometimes I wish I could enjoy life like a real nineteen-year old girl.” What did she mean by that and what does a father think about this ?
'She meant she sometimes wants to fool around and enjoy life like any other girl of her age. But she is aware that she would then not take her sport seriously.'
You share a close bond? Isn’t it too tight ?
'When Yanina was 7,5 years old, my wife became ill. She warned me at her bed: You have not seen your little girl growing up. I really took in that remark. Feel assured. I have my own life. And I stimulate her to build up her own. If she asks me to go to the movies, I tell her call a friend. I have other things to do.'
One day, you will have to let go of her.
'Yanina mentions that sometimes. She says, I am going to buy an flat or a house next to you. With a corridor, that I can lock when my husband is at home'
This close tie makes it hard for any coach?
'We have worked together during the last few months with a coach(Glen Schaap and Carlos Rodriguez/Philippe Dehaes, ed.).Yanina hated it. If I now bring up the coach subject, she is out in a second.'
Does she need a coach? It is going fine.
'I see a lot of dads that are would-be coaches. I am not like that. I want to remain a dad. My goal is not to turn her into a tennis champ, but a champ of life.'
Yesterday she mentioned a T-shirt you gave her as present. You have an idea for after this US Open?
'Yes, had this idea months ago. Something for after the US Open. BuT I wont give away what it is about'
If she makes the final?
'Even if she does not make it to the finals. For me Yanina won the Open already, even if she were to lose today.'
