What languages can Clijsters speak?

Belgium has 3 official languages (German, Dutch, French) and she hails from the flemish-speaking part of the country. Flemish is Belgian Dutch which encompasses more french loanwords than the dutch spoken in the Netherlands.

Does that mean she can speak fluent french as well?

Yes, but not as fluent as her English and Dutch.

Actually English is an official language in Belgium too. Though it only has a very select community, and not represented in the government. Anyway you better refer to Flemish in Belgium, cause our Dutch is not the same as the Dutch they use in the Netherlands.

Re: What languages can Clijsters speak?

The difference between Flemish and Dutch is like the difference between American English and UK English. Sometimes we think they use funny words and vice versa But for the most part we can understand each other just fine. In school, we are supposed to learn "standard Dutch", which should be the same in Flanders and the Netherlands.

In Flemisch schools, everyone gets at least 8 years of French, so everyone should be able to speak at least some French. English is also compulsory as third language and some students can choose to take German as well. But of course there is a big diffference between studying a language and being able to speak it (my French for example is horrible...)

You would probably get better responses in her player forum. The posters in there know her the best, it seems.

It isn't.

Obviously, in Brussels, a lot of English is spoken (ditto in several companies that have are of some international standing) but it's not an official language.

There's a small German speaking part in Belgium, land that was given to Belgium in the Versaille treaty as compensation for the war. It used to be part of Germany.

And there are only 50000 people (give or take) living in that area. Probably the most well-protected minority in the entire world. They even have their own regional government...

Three official languages for such a tiny country is already enough I'd think

Officially, it is called Dutch. It's the same language. We use the same spelling and grammar rules. We simply speak with a different accent, there are certain words and expressions we use that Dutch people won't use and vice versa.
