Oudin has to be proud of herself.

Hope she keeps it up.

Melanie Oudin's magical run at U.S. Open ends

The 17-year-old from Marietta, Ga., loses quarterfinal match to ninth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, 6-2, 6-2.

Reporting from New York - Melanie Oudin had four chances to seize her U.S. Open quarterfinal match against Caroline Wozniacki on Wednesday night.

In the second set, on consecutive Wozniacki service games, Oudin had four break-point opportunities, opportunities earned because of cleverly aggressive plays, a willingness to try drop shots and take pace off passing shots. But each time, Wozniacki narrowed her eyes and recovered.

Because of that composure and also the way she calculated all the correct angles, the ninth-seeded Wozniacki ended the magical run of the 17-year-old Oudin of Marietta, Ga. Wozniacki, a 19-year-old from Denmark advanced to her first major tournament semifinal with a 6-2, 6-2 win.

Wozniacki will play another unseeded teenager, 19-year-old Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, who blasted her way past yet another unlikely quarterfinalist, 52nd-ranked Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine, 7-5, 6-4. Belgium's Kim Clijsters and second-seeded Serena Williams will play in the other women's semifinal Friday.

It was Oudin's first night match on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court and she lost the first three games in only eight minutes while scoring only four points (one courtesy of a Wozniacki double fault).

But even though the final result looked overwhelming, the match lasted 1 hour 28 minutes.

Wozniacki apologized for beating the loudly supported Oudin.

"I'm sorry I won against Melanie today but hopefully I won many of you guy's hearts and you'll be cheering for me in my next match," she said. By the reaction, it seems she had.

In a men's quarterfinal, fourth-seeded Novak Djokovic reached the semifinals here for the third straight year with his 6-7 (2), 6-1, 7-5, 6-2 over 10th-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain. Djokovic will play the winner of Wednesday's final match between top-seeded and five-time defending champion Roger Federer and 12th-seeded Robin Soderling in Saturday's men's semifinals.

Earlier there had been a minor upset on the same court. Bob and Mike Bryan, the top-seeded twins from Camarillo, lost in the men's doubles semifinals to the fourth-seeded team of Lukas Dlouhy of the Czech Republic and India's Leander Paes, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (6).

Another team of American siblings, Venus and Serena Williams, did win their doubles match. The fourth-seeded Williams sisters beat the 11th-seeded Chinese team of Yan Zi and Zheng Jie, 7-5, 6-4.

After Wickmayer's win in her quarterfinal match, her father and coach, Marc, wiped tears from his eyes. Janina's mother died of cancer when Janina was 9 and Marc, a builder, packed himself and Janina up and moved to Florida to help tend to Janina's passion for tennis.

After her fourth-round win over Petra Kvitova, Wickmayer explained the move to Tampa.

"I wanted to get away from home," she said. "I loved playing tennis, I really enjoyed it but I wanted to get away from home . . . be around other people. That's why we left."

Bondarenko, 23, came here ranked 52nd which was 20 spots worse than her younger sister, Alona. Kateryna will leave here ranked higher than Alona and with the feeling she played well in the quarterfinals.

"Even if I had a break point, Yanina just didn't give me a chance to win," Bondarenko said. "When she was break points down, she hit winners. I cannot tell you I was playing bad. She was playing good."

Bob Bryan spoke for he and his brother and he had to answer questions about whether the team had spent too much time giving interviews and promoting a CD they are releasing called "Let It Rip."

"Can that be the excuse?" Bob said. "No, it isn't."

At the FedCup, if she runs out of Russians (to beat), then it will bode well for the US.

She had a great run. The scoreline doesn't reflect how much she put Wozniacki under pressure in the beginning of the 2nd set. The tide was close to turning. She will be a real factor in the years to come.

Interesting that Oudin is called "Houdini" because etymologically they are similar names. (Take off the H and I from "Houdini".) It's a bit like Wozniak and Wozniacki.

BTW, Melanie has one more act-- the talk show circuit. She will appear on both the Tonight Show and The Ellen Degeneres Show on Monday.

Brilliant -- pull out of Quebec City to do talk show circuit? So American.

Re: Oudin "Houdini" Runs Out Of Magic, Runs Out Of Russians, Out Of Wins

It's a sensible decision. I doubt she could be able to focus 100 percent on Quebec after the last 10 days. She gets a break and some time to process the tournament and all the turmoil she has been through. Doing the talkshows will also help raise her profile even further and is bound to please her sponsors as well as attracting new ones.
