Why do commentators always say Li's full name?

Li Na this, Li Na that. Why not just her surname like they do with everyone else?

Re: Why do commentators always say Li's full name?

Because it`s so short and because they aren`t sure which is her first and which her last name.

Jelena Dementjeva
Marion Bartoli
Patty Schnyder

Majerič, Hercog, Rampre, ...
Šarapova, Kerber, Kirilenko, Makarova, Robson, Pavljučenkova, Svitolina, Vekić, Putinceva, ...

They probably can't tell which is her first name and which is her last and it's easier for them to say both.

Proud Blackjack!

That's actually fairly standard for American journalists in general, and has been that way for a long time.

"If you practice for ten years, you may begin to please yourself, after 20 years you may become a performer and please the audience, after 30 years you may please even your guru, but you must practice for many more years before you finally become a true artist—then you may please even God." --Ali Akbar Khan, 1922-2009

It is proper to say both, for Chinese names. But I do agree they just find it easier and less confusing to say both.

Re: Why do commentators always say Li's full name?

It's short, unlike some of the Eastern European girls

Do you really expect them to say Yaroslava Shevdova every time she hits a winner?

Good Luck Radwanska Sisters!

Sorana Cirstea - Stefanie Voegele - Michelle Larcher de Brito - Alexandra Dulgheru

Martina I will miss you!!

Re: Why do commentators always say Li's full name?

I don't think it is because of surname confusion, as they don't do it with the other Chinese girls. Although that may just be because they are so uncertain of how to pronounce Zheng Jie.

It's because it's short and also because it is fun to say.

Just compare "Li Na" to "Lina Krasnoroutskaya"
