Sloane Stephens' dad, John, a former NFL star passed away at 43 yesterday.

And Sloane still managed to play her doubles match with Mashona Washington and lose in three sets.
I know this probably does not belong in GM but I think it belongs here along with Jelena's loss.

Sloane I hope this does not hurt your mental game.

Ohhhh no, that's very tramatic when someone dies tramatically...I know Angela Haynes went way down when her brother died unexpectantly, Serena with her sister.. it's a hard thing to get over.

Re: Sloane Stephens' dad, John, a former NFL star passed away at 43 yesterday.

Are you sure they are related?

Why would he be in Louisiana while Sloane was in NY for the biggest tournament of the year for her? Also the article said he resided in Lousiana, while Sloane resides in Florida.

It also says he was charged with rape twice....doesn't sound like the kind of man to get his daughter really active into tennis.

But if it is true then I am truly sorry for Sloane.

I'm glad somebody had the guts to not just do the automatic "poor A, poor B" act. And besides that, nobody mentioned how he died. He was speeding, lost control of his vehicle, it crossed the road (lucky nobody was coming the other way) and plowed into a tree hard enough for him 2B thrown through the windshield (probably into the tree trunk; naturally he wasn't wearing a safety belt, and I don't know if he was DUI but wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if he was).

I'm more sorry for her for having this kind of father than that apparently "he reaped what he sowed".
