INTERVIEW : Marat Safin defends his sister about the ranking issue

Source

Q. How difficult was to be No. 1? You were young. And then you talk about your sister; she's No. 1. You told us also about the papers writing about your private life. And also you remember Safinettes, the girls?
MARAT SAFIN: Still remember?

Q. So for your sister, it is not the same problem. At least she doesn't have all these boyfriends and pictures.
MARAT SAFIN: Well, everybody is hard on her why she's No. 1. You have this contest issue, is she a real No. 1 or not? You open the page, she made eight double faults, 43 unforced errors. She struggled, almost lost to 18 years old.
Who cares? I mean, she's No. 1 in the world. I have to protect my sister. The poor girl, she's trying her best. She's doing really well. She gets the attention, but not the kind of attention that a person deserves, especially when you're No. 1 in the world.
Everybody is giving her hard time about, Are you really No. 1 in the world? Yes, yes, she's really No. 1 in the world. Go check on the ranking. She didn't do the ranking.
Apparently there is some guy who made the ranking. On this ranking, she's No. 1 in the world. Serena, she didn't say even though she won two Grand Slams this year, she's No. 2. Sorry, but that's the way. Deal with that.
I'm just personally, I'm really like, I have to protect her. I feel like she deserve a little bit more than what she's getting right now. I think she's playing you can't imagine how crazy she is about sport. I don't think there is one person in the world who is more professional than her.
Everybody is like hitting on her and giving her a hard time about this, how many, what happened to this serve, what happened this, what happened with that? Leave her alone. Give her a little bit less questions. So it's just all to you guys. Make her happy. That's it.

Q. Luckily she doesn't have all those boyfriends as you had girlfriends.
MARAT SAFIN: Yeah. Yes, she's opposite of me.

just after reading that interview, how could we bash Safina again?

BTW @Safin's very last match in Slam, he will be missed for sure.

Good old Marat. I going to miss him. Very depressing US Open with him, Fabrice, and if rumours are true Ai, for this to be all their last Slam. 3 great players and, in Fabrices and Ais case at least, real sportspeople to look up to. (Marat was a bit wild for 9 year olds to look up to )

Let it go. Even Venus just defended Dinara. It's not even an issue any more. She's a consitent slamless player who deserves to be #1.

Yep the Queen is mentioned on a first name basis everywhere. She's at the very heart of the tennis world

McEnroe also said seeding systems were ridiculous and that Sharapova HAD to be seeded for Wimby even though she didn't deserve to be. he is full of crap.

I don't think she deserves to be Number One but after all it's not her fault really. Like she can never win when it REALLY matters, the 3 slam finals and the Olympics.

x 1000 @ Safin saying "I want to achieve some things. I'm a different than another person who want to lay back and do nothing for rest of the life and talk nonsense on ESPN, talk about my match against Sampras. I will not do that."

I wonder who he is talking about

Very honest responses (and we will miss those from Marat). Obviously he wants to defend his sister, but it sounds as if he is not overly confident about her being No. 1 either.

Re: INTERVIEW : Marat Safin defends his sister about the ranking issue

Marat can defend his sister all he wants, but until I see him out there in her box supporting her, it is all lip service to me. What else does he have to do that is more important than his sisters grandslam finals......its not like he is actually trying in his matches and playing competative tennis.

I am not conceited, I am just convinced

Maybe she doesn't want him to watch, sometime people don't like relatives watching.

Re: INTERVIEW : Marat Safin defends his sister about the ranking issue

I think the controversy is good for women's tennis.
After next week there are 5 months until the next major.
Is Serena going to win nothing for 5 months?

It gives the media and fans something to debate. To take sides on. That's always good.

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter....
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there
Enjoy This Moment!!
HEALTH and HAPPINESS to EVERYONE

Lol @ bringing up Serena completely unprompted. He'd fit in well on this forum.

Re: INTERVIEW : Marat Safin defends his sister about the ranking issue

He has a point though. Safina cops alot of flack but so does venus and serena and the entire WTA. This week the commentators ahve been moaning the women's serve when for so long they cheapened the sisters making it look like they were only successful because of their serve. How many times have we heard that serena came thru because of her serve and that said not in a manner to praise her good serve, but in a that's-not-fair sort of way!
This week seems to be all about the serve at the USO, maria's, elena's, safina's etc.
safina better brace herself, even if she won a slam, she would still be criticed for something else.

Rena- a tennis great! 22 at striking distance.
