Grunting aside, how big a prospect is De Brito?

I've only just watched her on Youtube. All I'd heard up until now was about her grunting (and yes it is the loudest yet).

But she also hits a damn good ball, and she's not done too badly to be in the top 100 of the race at 16.

Anybody know more about her?

Not too worried about the attitude yet, she's young. Seems to have everything but a serve-a halfway decent one like Jankovic would get her top 20.

She can actually produce a very nice strike, especially on the forehand. She has good early-preperation, and she maintains her court position well.

She undulates between attack and defense quite randomly though.

Oh, grunting aside? The "Big de Zero"....

But she will always be able to get a job as an air raid siren.

she's very good but her serve is a joke, especially her 2nd. When she improves that she'll be a force on tour.

She will never be well-known for more than her grunting.

Her fans are in denial.

Re: Grunting aside, how big a prospect is De Brito?

Larcher de Brito will be 17 in January. She has had five top 50 wins since her debut on tour in '07 and no top 10 wins [Shaugnessy (43), Zheng (15), Radwanska (17), Dulko (35), Pennetta (18)]. I guess the best way to judge her performance is to compare her to current Grand Slam champions before their 17th birthday.

Sharapova (13 top 50 wins before age 17, 0 top 10)
-Dechy (24), Mikaelin (34), Dementieva (15), Dokic (12), Harkleroad (39), Bovina (22), Srebotnik (36), Petrova (23), Loit (40), Sanchez Lorenzo (45), Frazier (50), Asagoe (50), Smashnova (19)

Ivanovic (4 top 50 wins before age 17, 0 top 10))
-Zakapolova (46), Kostanic (36), Golovin (29), Asagoe (39)

Kuznetsova (0 to 50 wins before age 17)

Venus (8 top 50 wins before age 17, 1 top 10)-Frazier (18), Wild (32), Miller (48), Sugiyama (29), Majoli (9), Capriati (28), Sawamatsu (48), Rubin (26)

Serena (22 top 50 wins before age 17, 6 top 10) -Tanasugarn (44), Svensson (46), Serna (44), Likhovtseva (27), Pierce (7), Seles (4), Lucic (48), Testud (13), Davenport (3), Sprilea (9), Sprilea (10), Paulus (26), Schnyder (17), Tauziat (12), Kruger (21), Martinez (8), Morariu (43), Monami (14), Sawamatsu (34), Sugiyama (17), Lucic (46), Testud (14)

Clijsters (10 top 50 wins before age 17, 1 top 10)-Coetzer (10), Huber (20), Applemans (49), Monami (13), Appelmans (35), Dechy (28), Pitowski (36), Huber (18), Mauresmo (15), Panova (42)

Mauresmo (0 top 50 wins before age 17)

She does stack up pretty well in comparison to Mauresmo and Kuznetsova, but I have seen her play a few times now and I have not been that impressed with her game. Her tenacity is what wins her a lot of matches. Her height should be a hindrance during her career. I can't really see her winning more than one or two majors, if that.

We can also compare her 5 top 50 wins to other precocious players who didn't quite live up to expectations of them to be future slam winners as a result of their early success (though some may still have a chance to turn it around).

Vaidisova (25 top 50 wins before age 17, 2 top 10 wins)-Golovin (29), Shaughnessy (47), Safina (45), Vento-Kabchi (50), Kostanic-Tosic (35), Sprem (18), Jankovic (20), Myskina (6), Asagoe (22), Groenefeld (46), Smashnova (49), Dechy (15), Peschke (36), Morigami (50), Bartoli (45), Morigami (49), Kirilenko (26), Golovin (25), Martinez (40), Dulko (34), Petrova (9), Zakapalova (40), Hantuchova (17), Chakvetadze (36), Pennetta (20)

Karatantcheva (8 to 50 wins before age 17, 0 top 10)-Serna (25), Camerin (43), Likhovtseva (24), Asagoe (21), Venus (13), Raymond (47), Jankovic (19), Zvonareva (19)

Golovin (19 top 50 wins before age 17, 2 top 10)-Smashnova (17), Krasnoroutskaya (25), Smashnova (19), Hantuchova (29), Dementieva (10), Asagoe (48), Safina (32), Likhovtseva (41), Asagoe (38), Loit (36), Schiavone (17), Zuluaga (25), Dulko (43), Loit (39), Medina Garrigues (39), Kuznetsova (5), Safina (44), Pennetta (38), Sugiyama (21)

Krasnoroutskaya (6 top 50 wins before age 17, 0 top 10)
-Farina Elia (26), Talaja (34), Dechy (22), Grande (46), Sanchez-Vicario (14), Likhovtseva (28)

Kournikova (29 top 50 wins before age 17, 8 top 10 wins)- Lee-Waters (47), Paulus (14), Coetzer (13), Coetzer (15), Studentikova (34), Wang (38), Sanchez-Vicario (6), Rubin (31), Rittner (50), Huber (10), Majoli (5), Appelmans (19), Schett (32), Farina Elia (40), Huber (13), Basuki (22), Rubin (47), Lucic (46), Seles (4), Martinez (9), Davenport (2), Sanchez-Vicario (8), Schnyder (17), Paulus (26), Majoli (11), Likhovtseva (37), Sanchez-Vicario (5), Hingis (1), Mauresmo (34)

Kournikova had the most success against the top 50 and 10, but she infamously did not win a WTA tour singles title. Larcher de Brito's modest success thus far does not really indicate much as far as her future goes.
