Is Maria Sharapova getting better on clay... and worse on grass?

Last 3 years' French Open and Wimbledon results....

FRENCH OPEN - SF (2007), 4r (2008), QF (2009)
WIMBLEDON - 4r (2007), 2r (2008), 2r (2009)

Her last clay court title... Bausch & Lomb Championships (Amelia Island) in 2008.
Her last grass court title... DFS Classic (Birmingham) in 2006.

Is she going to win the French Open to complete the Grand Slam soon?

It's weird. While the clay takes some sting out of her ground strokes, she's at least in control. Many women don't move well on clay, so her shots are still hard to handle.

I think she's not aggressive enough on grass, and her footing has been miserable the last few years. It's quite odd to see.

Hard is far and away her best surface though, surely.

She gets over-injured by that time of year.

Re: Is Maria Sharapova getting better on clay... and worse on grass?

Hardcourt is her best surface.
She's still pretty good on grass, she made SF in Birmingham this year. Let's say she's been bad at Wimbledon the last two years. From 2005 to 2007, she lost only to the eventual champions.
It's a little bit of a myth that she sucks on clay. People are like "she doesn't slide, that's soo bad!" but actually she loses only to clay court "specialists". For example at RG since 2004, she lost to: Paola Suarez, Justine Henin, Dinara Safina, Ana Ivanovic, Dinara Safina and Dominika Cibulkova. She's efficient and I think she will eventually win it at RG.

Not as good on grass as people thought and not as bad on clay as people thought.

On grass, we all know..with perfect health who the top two players are. Maria kinda peaked and cashed in with her win in 2004. Right now as long as the sisters are around, can't see anybody else winning Wimby.

On clay it's funny..clay seems to give her more time and she can load her shots better.

Always bet on black!

There's really no evidence for that.
She lost to Li and Dulko this year, last year to Alla K.

While I don't think these losses are indicative of her potential, she's done better on hard courts since winning Wimbledon in 2005.

She'd really like to have that 2006 SF back...
