Interesting...player and coach entered in the same tournament

Looking at the main draw for a 10K in Morocco, an unranked 17-year-old named Anna Morgina is being coached by 25-year-old Galina Fokina, who is also playing in the bottom half.

If they were to meet in the finals, I would bet on Galina, if I knew nothing about her, simply because she'd know all of Anna's weaknesses.

Anyone seen a player and their coach entered in the same tourney before?

Why is Galina Fokina coaching? Has she semi-retired?

And if your life were gold, how long do you think you'd stay living?

^ Galina actually seems to be trying to reignite her career. She's actually playing outside of Egypt for the first time in years. Anna is also her doubles partner...

I think Galina is only playing these tourneys outside of Egypt because the girl she is coaching is playing them - doubtful she'd play them otherwise. Guess it makes her a bit extra money and if she's gonna be there, then why not? She should (and usually does) at least make the final in all these sorts of tourneys.

It's not rare on 10k level tournaments.

Winter Is Coming

"Fine words." Tyrion was unimpressed. "Words are wind. Who is this bloody savior?"
"A dragon." The cheesemonger saw the look on his face at that, and laughed. "A dragon with three heads."

If they were to meet in the finals...Galina would probably withdraw or let the kid win, I'm sure. Her job now is a coach, not a full time player. If she beats her own player she would be fired by the parents

Good point, but if she was to play, and play properly, then Galina should win.

Btw Why didn't Fokina pursue a "normal" pro career?

Re: Interesting...player and coach entered in the same tournament

She did, but was better in doubles than singles, and then she just kinda stopped playing tourneys and was coaching in Egypt I believe.

Ok, apparently Fokina is not that good, perhaps . Back a few years ago I had thought she was a relevant potential in that generation of Russians.

Fokina has a win over Kournikova in an indoor tournament in 2001

Anastasia Myskina

She had potential, but resultswise, she always seemed to do better in doubles, and then like I said, she just kinda stopped playing tourneys.

Because she couldn't manage to keep high enough in the rankings to get direct entry, apparently. She seems to still play a lot of doubles in ITF's.
