Re: Has a WTA ever Passed away before the retired

I don't think so. I remember a Bulgarian player in the early 90's (Elena Pampoulova-Wagner) who lost her husband so she was the official widow of the Tour.

A couple of junior sisters died some years ago in a car accident shortly after playing in Wimbledon but they were not pro yet. There is a thread about it in the Juniors forum.

The only one I can remember is American Cynthia MacGregor, who used to play doubles with her sister Cammy in the 80's and early 90's.

Karen Krantzcke collapsed and died in 1977 aged 30 while still on tour. Karen lade the QF in singles at all four majors, was a three-times semifinalist and reached a further 6 QF in singles. She was Aussie doubles champ in '68 and Wimbledon finalist in 74. The WTA Sportsmanship award is named after her.

Andrea Buchanan was a US player who formed, along with Zina Garrison, Leslie Allen and Kim Sands, a quartet of very promising balck women players in the early 80s, who was shot dead in LA in 1982. She was in her mid 20s.

On ATP Side I remember Michael Westphal, who died because of Aids in the early nineties.
The girlfriend of Westphal married Michael Stich a few years after that.

Re: Has a WTA ever Passed away before the retired

Daniela Klemenschits and Sandra Klemenschits both got stomach cancer. Daniela died but Sandra overcame it and is now on the tour again. She plays challenger doubles frequently and has won a title or two in the past year I think. She also played in Budapest this week.

My number one: Victoria Azarenka

ATP: Novak Djoković

Crazy Frenches! Gilles Simon Alizé Cornet
