Best singles = Best doubles players?

The Williams-Sisters are in the Top Ten playing only 4 tournaments within the last year!

They only played at the majors this year winning the Australian-Open and Wimbledon. Their only loss came to Nadja Petrova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the third round of the French-Open 6:7 7:5 6:7.

Also they won the Olympics in August last year (without any points for the ranking) and played in Stuttgart where they were forced to withdraw.

After their stunning title defence in Wimbledon (6:0 6:0 vs Yan/Zheng and 6:1 6:2 vs Black/Huber) there's probably no doubt about it that Venus and Serena are the best doubles team in the world.

But what do you think: If the best singles-players would team up, would they be more sucessful than the doubles specialists like Black, Huber, Stubbs & Co?

What about Safina/Kuznetsova? Jankovic/Ivanovic? Dementieva/Petrova? Azarenka/Wozniacki?

Most of these players play doubles but not reguarly. Most top ATP-players never play doubles. And it would be interesting to see if Federer and Nadal could dominate the doubles-tour too!

I think, outside the fact that the sisters are tremendously good players, the fact that they're able to spend a lot of time together practicing as a pair helps too.
It would be good, though, if other top singles players got more involved in doubles as well, all the credit to V&S for making the effort.

Kuznetsova/Mauresmo played doubles during wimbledon, lost in the 3rd round I think. Also, Sabine/Ivanovic got schooled 6-1 6-2 by Cara/Liezel.

No. It doesn't work that way. The Williams sisters are good doubles players but they're the best because they work together so well and know each other's games. Plus it helps to have two really big servers to help set up the volleys.

It wouldn't necessarily work with two top singles players getting together. Case in point was players like Graf and Seles who never really excelled at doubles.

Again, it wouldn't work. Federer/Nadal would be a disaster. At least they won't win a grand slam, I can guarantee you that.

Divas: Seles, Sharapova, Muguruza
Pas de Quatre:
Swan Lake, Giselle, The Nutcracker, Coppélia

But Federer played with Wawrinka last year at the Olympics - and the won!

Mauresmo & Kuznetsova played a few times (3 tournaments this year) and won in Miami!

No doubt about that, if they bothered to practice. Doubles tour is basically a ground for players who realized their abilities weren't sufficient for singles or players past their prime.

Re: Best singles = Best doubles players?

I agree! But that's even worse on the ATP-tour. The doubles-tour seems to be a senior-tour. :-D

And once in a while Federer, Roddick, Nadal & Co play doubles with friends, for fun, to get some matches or whatever.

At least a few female players like Davenport, Clijsters, Hantuchova etc. took the doubles competition for serious.

But I am pretty sure, if all top singles players were forced to play doubles, Black & Huber could play on ITF-level! ;-)

*(I'm not saying players should be forced to play doubles though - IMO they could cancel the doubles competition at all)

The Williams sisters are an amazing doubles team aswell as two great singles players, they are exceptional at both. What makes them so good in doubles is they know each other inside out, they have such a great attitude, and both have effective all-court games and huge serves, so they're constantly in an aggressive position without having any weaknesses. That wouldn't work with many other top singles players (Sharapova, Ivanovic, Jankovic etc.) who simply do not have that teamwork ability or the games to be successful in doubles. As mentioned by reetard, Kuznetsova/Mauresmo were handily beaten by one of the best doubles teams Stosur & Stubbs. They were also beaten 6-1 6-2 in a Wimbledon final by Black & Huber.

Cara Black & Liezel Huber are the undisputed best doubles team in the world btw, although by their performance this week the Williams sisters are the best on grass, they've been unbeatable these last two years at Wimbledon.

Re: Best singles = Best doubles players?

I will always stick with Mauresmo/Kuznetsova if they played together even more they could be very highly ranked

Stosur/Pironkova/Robson/Govortsova/Kuznetsova/Safina/GB Girls
U.Radwanska/K.Bondarenko/A.Bondarenko/Azarenka/Mauresmo/A.Radwanska

Official Right Midfielder Of The Sveta Football Team

Re: Best singles = Best doubles players?

I think that since 2000 or so, the only top players who did well in doubles are the Williams sisters, Davenport, Hingis and Clijsters. And by well, I mean they won at least a doubles GS. That's definitely not much, but it proves it's possible to be good at both.

I know I've been a liar
And I know I've been a fool
I hope we didn't break it
But I'm glad we broke the rules
My cave is deep now
Yet your light is shining through
I cover my eyes
Still all I see is you

When top players take doubles seriously, they do make better doubles teams. Prior to the Navratilova era, most top players took doubles seriously. Court,King,Wade,Cassals,Durr,du Pont,Brough,Hart,Fry,Gibson,Jacobs,Palfrey,Betz,Mo ody,Lenglin, etc all took doubles seriously and had either one or two major partners and won many championships. When you have two top player teams like the Willams and Nav-Shriver against second tier players, they will dominate if they care to, as these two teams have. The Court-King,duPont-Brough eras were much more competitive doubles eras than the Nav-Pam and Williams eras

Re: Best singles = Best doubles players?

To be effective at doubles at least one player should be efficient at the net. And in the current top ten, the only ones who have good net skills are the Williams sisters and Kuznetsova.

Federer and Wawrinka were great last year in the Olympics beating the Bryan Brothers.
