Venus pulled a Rafa today in the Wimbledon final

Even though Venus refuses to admit it publicly, she IS suffering from pain in her left knee. Because Venus has played so much tennis - every day this week - the inflammation in her knee has became more of a factor and obviously affected her movement in the final.

Serena brought her A game today - solid serving, good returns and few errors and deserved to win. However, make no mistake, Venus was not on her game by a mile. The only reason the scoreline looked respectable was because Venus' serve helped her serve.

If you review the match you will notice that Venus was not moving as well as she moved 2 days ago - so much so that she fell twice. Venus could not get to balls that she was tracking down throughout the fortnight. When get to balls, she looked awkward and her footing was off. Venus looked dejected throughout the final because she was in pain and her knee hindered her from playing at her optimal level.

Venus also did not move well in the doubles semifinals yesterday. Without her agility, one of her weapons on the grass - Venus is reduced to a close to average player.

Rafa had the same issue at the French Open this year. Like Venus, the knee injury affected his movement on his favorite surface yet he continued to play through the pain because the Grand Slam meant so much to him. They both are too professional to withdraw from a Grand Slam match. Unfortunately for Rafa, Soderling knocked him out early.

Venus needs to take 1 month off to rest and rehabilitate her knee. However, knowing Venus, she will honor her commitment to Billie Jean and play World Team tennis later this month and then withdraw from her upcoming WTA tournament with a knee injury.

She should've withdrawn from the doubles.

Re: Venus pulled a Rafa today in the Wimbledon final

Venus will not withdraw - they are the defending champions. Venus has dodged the question all week, including last night when Mary Carillo asked her about her knee. She doesn't want to use it as an excuse - period. Oracene is very honest - she would not admit that Venus is in pain if she wasn't.

If you recall, Venus played the 2003 Wimbledon final against Serena with an abdominal tear when she could barely serve. The injury kept her off the tour for months.
Serena will carry Venus in the doubles final - Venus will serve and Serena will put away the reply at the net.

Total BS, but I knew someone would start this thread, she lost 20 games in 6 matches on the way to the final and she was injured? Serena lost 17 alone in her semi!

Ivanovic * Kvitova * Serena

Re: Venus pulled a Rafa today in the Wimbledon final

I'm not gonna excuse Venus' performance and say she pulled a Rafa. If that's the case then Venus should have pulled out of the doubles and just focused on the singles. But since she chose to play singles and doubles, then I'm not gonna use her knee as an excuse.

She was fine physically. The only thing broken is that godawful serve.

I always wanted to be somebody. If I made it, it's half because I was game enough to take a lot of punishment along the way and half because there were a lot of people who cared enough to help me.

She lost. Serena outserved her. It was not about the rallies.

Even if she had been able to move better or showed up for the second set, Serena's serving was unbelievably good today.

Re: Venus pulled a Rafa today in the Wimbledon final

Even if she's injured, it didn't inhibit her play throughout the tournament. Obviously if you thrash the world number 1 in the semis, you're pretty healthy. Luckily she has a month to rest it so hopefully whatever this is will go away.

Funny how some people were saying that Jelena was injured when she went out and very few complained.

Double standards abound.

For Dante, it follows then, that the only way to get into Hell is to insist upon it. One must deliberately exclude himself from grace by hardening his heart against it. Hell is what the damned have actively and insistently wished for.

Define 'Godawful'. From what I seen, Venus served well. Serena served better, what a surprise, she does have the best serve ever.

I think with her serve and her athleticism, her power, her court mobility, I just think when she’s on, she’s the greatest player we’ve ever seen, ever. Now, whether her record is the greatest remains to be seen because she hasn’t retired yet. But I think she is really the greatest player. I have seen Martina and Steffi at their best. There are little chinks in those players’ armor, but it was a different era, where you didn’t need to be the perfect player.
