Serena's level against Dementieva won't cut it against Venus.

As great a match as that was yesterday, if Serena has those same lapses tomorrow, the final will be over in an hour and five minutes, like 6-3, 6-4. Serena had better come out guns blazing, take no prisoners from the 1st game, or she is toast.

Serena's level can change drastically, she played a brilliant match against Azarenka, who is to say that she wont play at the same level tomorrow?

Serena is very unpredicatble.

You act as if Elena had nothing to do with Serena's level.

Certainly didnt say that, but there was a period in the middle of the second set when Serena was really playing crap. She got away with it because Lena failed to take advantage, but Venus won't make that same mistake...

Re: Serena's level against Dementieva won't cut it against Venus.

Certainly, based on the level of play in the semis Venus is clear favorite for this match but every day is a new day. Who would have thought that Justine will prevail against Kim US Open 2003 after that fight against Capriati? Who would have thought that Capriati will win against Hingis AO 2001? Same goes for Serena at FO 2003 where she "killed" Amelie and lost against Justine after that. Brilliance or a crap performance can not be repeated every day.

Vee won't have bad time? You'll never know.
Unless she's destined to be the Queen of Wimbledon.

Re: Serena's level against Dementieva won't cut it against Venus.

Serena has a few gears in the mental game department. She has shown it many times that after a weak performance in one match she can deliver an extremely focused and crushing performance. She had some of those in AO finals, big matches against Mauresmo and Henin and most recently in the quarters against Azarenka. She gets mentally drained and can not keep it for long, multi match stretches. She definitely didn't have it against Dementieva. She didn't see the ball as sharp, didn't adjust her steps, mistimed the hits and had to rely on guts and power to get her through.
But, with the big occasion she might just step up and start "treeing" for a whole match. If that happens she will break Venus spirit within a set and put too much pressure for Venus to handle later in the match.
My money (if I were a betting man) would be on Serena in 3, after a close first set, cruising in last two.

You would have to assume any other player would be both physically and emotionally drained after that knife fight on Centre Court yesterday. But Serena is probably the one WTA player right now who has a chance at coming back and actually elevating her game. (Although, again, I thought she played pretty amazingly overall--some rough patches, but I've seen Lena D. play a lot worse than that and win--including against SW).

No one who saw their doubles match today would assume that, Serena was extremely fresh and was running after every ball .

Doubles is a different game. And I did say Ree is the exception.

I'm sure she knows that..but Vee shouldn't come out and expect to win 1 and 0 either.

she surely won't expect that nor is she going to get that against Serena.

but she doesn't need to win 0 and 1 to win the title anyway. just straight sets, I hope.
