i believe that Widjaja and Lucic had higher jumps....especially since they won their tournaments they first played in....so maybe they counted ITFs..

Ill check my player guide later though

Yep, Capriati's first ranking was somewhere in the top 30 and Martina Hingis first ranking was # 87 after her 3 first tournaments

Best Ranking Debuts:

Andrea Jaeger #19
Tracy Austin #21
Renee Richards (!) #21
Pam Shriver #24
Jennifer Capriati #25
Kathy Jordan #28
Zina Garrison #29
Andrea Leand #29
Anne Smith #32

Even though those aren't technically "jumps," they're more impressive, no?

Not then she wasn't.

Believe it or not, only women can play women's professional tennis.

I'm not talking about Ranking debuts! Of course a lot of players have debuted in the top 100. I'm talking about a player that had a ranking and then made a huge rise.

Does anyone know of a rise bigger than Bielik's??????

I think Renee Richards was the man that had an operation to become a woman??? right? I know there is someone that played on both tours. Can't remember who it was.

Great for Bea!
I see Elena Bovina took a big leap this month also from 61 to 39 and Amy Frazier went from 73 to 50. Not as big as Bea's leap! That's awesome!

you needed 6 tournaments back in Jens day to be ranked so you had more of a chance to get a higher one

since the new 3 tourn system
Mirjana's record is one which will probably never be defeated unless a top player goes injured for a year and comes back.

Here's Serena's info from wtatour.com

In 1997,

First Tour main-draw appearance came as a qualifier at Moscow, where she lost to No. 22 Po; In just her second career main-draw event at Chicago as a WC, d. No. 7 Pierce in 2r and No. 4 Seles in QF before losing to Davenport in SF; ranked No. 304, became the lowest-ranked player to defeat a player in the Top 5 since unranked Stephanie Rehe defeated No. 3 Sabatini at 1990 Los Angeles, and the lowest-ranked player to defeat two Top 10 players in one tournament; ranking vaulted from No. 304 to 102

A couple of notes: Renee Richards WAS the guy who had the operation to become a woman. I didn't hear that that he actually ever played on the men's tour. I read that he was a good collegiate-level player, but I'm not sure if he ever played a pro tournament as a man.

As for Jennifer Capriati, she achieved her Top 30 Ranking with THREE tournaments, not six. This one I'm sure about. She played Boca Raton (runner-up), Key Biscayne (3rd round), and Hilton Head Island (runner-up) before her ranking came out. She made the most spectacular debut that I've ever seen, not to mention the most hyped-up.

As far as ranking jumps are concerned, I've got to think Bea's is tops, or at least close to it.
