"The Ice Princess"

Back in the day, that was the nickname for Christine Marie Evert.

Didn't show emotion, didn't let you in, couldn't tell if she was winning or losing. (Her preturnatural ability to shatter the sexual relationships around her may or may not be elated.)

Shockingly, Venus Williams didn't inherit this nickname. Ice = White, Heat = Black may have had something to do with that. Venus being the elder, so Serena was always the 'princess' is no doubt equally influential.

Maria Sharpova is certainly the ice princess OFF the court, (and off-camera) by all accounts. But on the court, her emotions are pretty easy to read, if she's losing.

Who of the current under-25 crop gives you that Chirs Evert/Venus Williams 'I keep it all inside' quality? AND, has the multi-GS winning skill and talent?

Who's the next 'Ice Princess'?

I don't know but Helen Wills was the original Ice Princess, she was Little Miss Poker Face.

Well we know its not Serena, she lets you know what she is feeling. I don't think Vee is either, she is not as expressive as Serena but sometimes when she is losing she lets you in.

Re: "The Ice Princess"

Slight OT: For me at least, the reason Venus doesn't get called an Ice Princess is because her lack of emotion feels like a by-product of her seeming away with the fairies during ( but more importantly, after) a match rather than a cold, aloofness like you get with Maria. Venus comes across as much more gentle than other players and warmer - its a different quality of emotional distance than with what I associate Ice Princess/Queens to be.

and where they produce desolation, they call it peace

Re: "The Ice Princess"

I think Venus and Elena both have an "Ice Princess" mode when they're at they're best. True Ice Princesses, though, don't have meltdowns, and I think that any fan of either of these two has to admit they are far too prone go into self-destruct mode and battle nerves (Lena moreso than Vee, but both have had their problems).

To me, an Ice Princess it's not just the demeanor, it's the cold, cool nerves. I'd say actually Masha comes the closest because the other youngsters are too choke-prone and inconsistent.

Remember, part of Chris's stone cold rep comes from that insane, over .900 lifetime winning percentage that gets her invited to the GOAT party. That's not ice cold, that's Lord Kelvin cold.

LOL. It is true that when you're winning, it easier to remain impassive, and Evert didn't lose much.

Venus Williams almost started crying on court @ the French 2008 against Miss Paneta. This is hardly keeping it inside.
