Greatest Wimbledon Champions of all time: Experts Pick

Posted on Wimbledon site:

We asked an expert panel to vote for their greatest Wimbledon Champion of all time. Chaired by Britain's most successful preformer at Wimbledon since Fred Perry and HSBC ambassador Tim Henman, ou expert panel of tennis journalists and former players voted for their Top 5 Men's and 5 Women's Wimbledon Singles Champions, to produce "The Experts Top 10":

Top 5 Women Champions
Steffi Graf
Billie Jean-King
Suzanne Lengren
Martina Navratilova
Venus Williams

Top 5 Men Champions

Bjorn Borg
Roger Federer
Rod Laver
John McEnroe
Pete Sampras

The HSBC Expert Panel consisted of:

Tracey Austin (former US Open Champion)
Jeremy Bates (Former British Number 1 & LTA Head of Men's Tennis)
John Barrett (ex BBC broadcaster & All England Club Member
Bud Collins (US broadcaster & Journalist)
Mike Dickson (Daily Mail)
Jo Durie (Former British Number 1)
Neil Harman (The Times)
Mark Hodgkinson (Daily Telegraph)
John Inverdale (BBC)
Pam Shriver (Former Wimbledon Ladies Doubles Champion)
Virginia Wade (Former Wimbledon Champions)

Venus and Roger are the only active players to be among the all time greats. Both have 5 Wimbledon titles each. Will one or both get to six in 2009?

Re: Greatest Wimbledon Champions of all time: Experts Pick

They are both all-time Wimby greats. Neither are THE all-time Wimby Great - Sampras and Nav still hang on to those positions, unless one wants to be picky and go back to the days of William Renshaw and make an argument for him.

Win or lose, neither Venus nor Roger will become the Wimby GOAT this year.

My picks for Wimby this year are Serena (edging out Venus) and Roger.

Co-sign. I really think that Serena and Venus are on the verge of putting on one of the best women's matches that we'll see...much like Roger and Rafa did for the men last year. I also think that Roger is ready to add to his history - not only win #15, but become one of the few players to complete the French/Wimbledon double. That's history too. It's going to be an exciting fortnight!

They put asterisks on all her Wimbledon titles because Suzanne turned pro.

Yep. You're right, but I assumed they didnt want to pick people before the Open era, and picked the greatest pre Open era Wimbledon champ.

Otherwise it should be Lenglen,Wills Moody,King,Navratilova and Graf.

WTF? Can we also put asterisks on Graf's 93, 95 and 96 Wimbedons then?
