First look: In ESPN's magazine, showing skin is no issue

By Michael McCarthy, USA TODAY

Tennis star Serena Williams, the NBA's Dwight Howard, the NFL's Adrian Peterson and mixed martial artist Gina Carano are among the 30-plus athletes posing nude or semi-nude in ESPN The Magazine's first-ever "Body Issue" hitting newsstands Oct. 9.

The magazine will show athletes on the field and off, and even in the operating room during knee surgery, said editor-in-chief Gary Belsky during a conference call Wednesday.

In one section called "Bodies We Want" top athletes either pose in the buff (with private parts strategically covered) or with minimal clothing. The section is "essentially our version of the best bodies in sports," said Belsky.

The magazine has chosen six athletes (3 male and 3 female) from this section to appear on six different magazine covers.

In another section called "Exposure," groups of athletes from the LPGA, the U.S. Women's Softball Team, the NHL's Edmonton Oilers, Major League Soccer's D.C. United and even a group of poker players pose in their birthday suits.

Most athletes were enthusiastic about appearing, Belsky said. Some even contacted the magazine themselves. Other big names took a pass.

"I'm pretty sure we asked Tiger Woods or his people. … I'm guessing he turned us down," he said. "We'll get him next year."

ESPN did not ask Danica Patrick, who appears elsewhere in the issue's regular sports coverage. But she could appear in the future. "She's going to be racing for a while. We'll be doing this issue every year. So I'm sure we'll get to her at some point."

A rundown on athletes appearing:

•Tennis: Williams, James Blake

•NFL: Peterson, Casey Hampton, Torry Holt

•NBA/WNBA: Howard, Cappie Pondexter

•Major League Baseball: Nelson Cruz, Joba Chamberlain and Ivan Rodriguez

•NHL: Zdeno Chara, Chris Higgins, Sheldon Souray, Bill Guerin, Mike Komisarek

•NASCAR: Carl Edwards, Mark Martin

•Olympics: Jessica Mendoza, Susan Francia, Shawn Johnson, Allison Baver, Johnny Weir, Cheryl Haworth

•Boxing: Manny Pacquiao

•LPGA: Christina Kim, Sandra Gal, Anna Grzebien

•Mixed martial arts: Carano, Randy Couture

•Surfing: Claire Bevilacqua; Laird Hamilton

•Soccer: Natasha Kai, Chris Pontius, Bryan Namoff, Clyde Simms

•Skiing: Kristi Leskinen, Julia Mancuso

•Track and field: Lolo Jones, Michelle Carter

•Horse racing: Alexis Solis.

Olympic softball star Mendoza, president of the Women's Sports Foundation, posed while eight months pregnant. "I try to get young girls to see themselves as beautiful and to not feel insecure about their bodies," she said. "The more we can get more realistic bodies in front of them, the better."
How many pages are James and Serena getting because they might need two pages for all that ass.

I love Cappie Pondexter. I love her skills on the court. I think she's an phenominal athlete and probably the best women guard since Dawn Staley but I don't want to see her nude.
I want to see her with her clothes on breaking opponents ankles with her crossovers.

Interesting that the prettiest jew in the land, Johnny Weir is going nude.
As former Philadelphia Eagle Vai Sikahema mentioned at Turino in 2006, Johnny Weir has a body many women would die for.

I don't know about Dwight Howard going nude because if it's not done right, the photo probably would better be off in a magazine like Black Inches.

And Manny Pacquaio would be better off preparing himself for his pound for pound fight against Mayweather (please when that bout happens, kick his ass for all of humanity).

I'm kinda dissapointed though.
I would have loved to see Wawrinka do a nude photo.

"Everybody always said I didn't get that job because my wife is white. If you're not strong enough to look through that then you have the issue."

Not shocked at the pick of the two Americans. I hope they at least offered it to Andy Roddick seeing as his wife has been in the last three or four years.

But isn't Shawn Johnson 17

Re: ESPN Magazine to do "All-Nude" Issue

Very interested in some of these
Serena - of course. Though I would have liked Sam Stosur

Dwight Howard - When Dwight Howard entered the NBA, Michelagelo petitioned to God to raise him from the dead so he could sculpt Dwight Howard. Howard's body is that incredible. Word is negotiations between undead artist and vengeful God are ongoing. Note 'vengeful'. David is reported a bit peeved as well.

Randy Couture - MMA fights pretty near naked, so nothing new there. But he's 45 years old. His body is going to intimidate a whole lot of people who buy that magazine. Especially since he's a profesional ass-kicker

Gina Carano - Same as Couture, MMA fights pretty near naked, so nothing new there. But Carano just got run over last month by Lady Cyborg. I wonder when they shot this.

Adrian Peterson - A Series 800 Terminator. Metal skeleton surrounded by living tissue.

Ivan Rodriguez - This is a baseball player who will wind up in the Hall of Fame, whos nickname his whole career has been 'Pudge'.

Mark Martin - 50 year old NASCAR driver currently leading their series championship. Are auto racers athletes? Or is the car doing the work?

Shawn Johnson - Naked gymnast? You could a whole issue on that one sport.

NOTE: Too bad they couldn't get Dara Torres

Proud to be an American
Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

Ive seen pictures of Dwight Howard when he was 17-18 and he was by no means muscular at all. Now he looks carved out of granite. His teammate and good friend was caught having HGH sent to his house...Ivan Rodriguez was caught using steroids. I think its quite evident that most of the people in this issue will be artificially built
