What Amelie REALLY said about Venus

There was a quote in the NY Times from Amelie Mauresmo today from her French interview that made it seem as if she were not praising Venus. I found this suspicious, since Amelie is typically gracious in defeat, and also I doubt this reporter could understand French. Plus this particular reporter has been very biased against Amelie in the past.

I looked up the French articles and here is what I found:

"J'ai trois balles pour revenir à 5-5 au troisième set mais elle a servi de manière incroyable, il n'y avait rien à faire. Bravo à elle."

Translation:
I had three points for coming back to 5-5 in the third set but she served in an incredible manner, there was nothing I could do. Bravo to her.

from: http://fr.sports.yahoo.com/020907/85/2qoht.html

Possibly she may have said other things unquoted in the French articles that only Ny Times understood but this sounds like the same passage syntactically, so I thought that should be cleared up. Reporters make up quotes all the time, and then this becomes like fact, repeated over and over again for years.

Who said that was a quote from a french interview? Why couldn't that been a quote from the english interview after the match during the press conference? Which by the way is not in its entirety on the usopen website. I seriously doubt the New York times would make up a quote. What would be the point to do that?

Who said you have to "admire" your opponent?? Amelie gave props for how Venus came back. Does Venus "admire" anyone she loses to?? Does any player "admire" players they lose to?? Give me a break!!!

Nobody says she should admire her as a person but Amelie should admire anyone who has won 4 grandslams since that is her ultimate goal is it not? Anyway here is the quote for Experimentee.

"Mauresmo was asked if she admired the way Venus fought back from love-40 to win the match.

"For sure, she got back from 0-40, but, no, I don't admire her," Mauresmo said. "That means what it means."

That question is not asking Amelie do you admire Venus the person but Venus the tennis player who was able to come back from 0-40 to win the match. It sounds like sour grapes and a bunch of jealousy. That last part, that means what it means, shows her ill will.

These are the exact questions and answers from her press conference:

Q. Could you talk about the last game, you had triple breakpoint.
AMELIE MAURESMO: Yeah, she just -- that point, you know, she served very well. Four big first serve, nothing I can do.

Q. Were you starting to think that when you had her Love-40 that you were going to break her and this would go to a third-set tiebreaker for the match?
AMELIE MAURESMO: No, I wasn't, you know, thinking of tiebreaker or whatever. I just thought I had pretty good chances to break her on this one. You know, I broke her a few times in that match, so I thought it was makeable. But as I said, I mean, she served unbelievably at that time and that's it.

She came very close yesterday; Venus just brought it up when she should have. Congrats to both players.

She typically is - I've been reading her interviews since 1999 and Wimby was an exception. You want to hang on that for the rest of her career, you are entitled to your opinion.

Reason is poor propaganda when opposed by the yammering, unceasing lies of shrewd and evil and self-serving men.

Amelie just has a nasty side plain and simple. She feels like the Williams finals are boring, and that's her own opinion. However, when you feel the need to express your negative opinions then expect for everyone not to like it.

Who really cares if she admires Venus? LMAO. I'm pretty sure Venus is not even thinking about her or anything she says. It's not that serious, she came off of a tough loss in a match she felt like she had a chance in. So, she's gonna be bitter.

Chill out, guys! Venus should feel lucky and relieved that Amelie doesn't admire her or, worse, LOVE her.

Ahem ... let's go back to tennis.

** TP for Topaz or TennisPower **

"Playing aggressive tennis ... that's always the way to go, if you ask me." - Venus Williams, May/2002
"Some shots I will hit hard but not every ball. I'm not just using my power." - Serena Williams, Oct/2002

Selena Roberts in her article specifically gives the quotation as coming from an interview with French reporters -- yet strangely this quotation was not mentioned in any of the French reports I've found. Does Selena even speak French? Why was she listening in to the French interview? She has made up quotes before.

Anyway, I know Amelie has expressed her admiration for Venus before, she said in February that she would love to play doubles with her, I don't think Amelie has any hostility towards them, although I'm sure she sees them as her rivals.
