Momo wins Heineken Star award

I C&Ped this from the NY Times site, for those who aren't registered with the site:
----------------------------------
Beaten Mauresmo Honored with Award at U.S. Open
By REUTERS
Filed at 6:38 p.m. ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - France's Amelie Mauresmo was pipped in three tight sets by champion Venus Williams in the semi-finals on Friday, but her U.S. Open heroics will not go unrewarded.

The 10th seed is the first female recipient of the annual Heineken Star Award, presented for her come-from-behind match against Jennifer Capriati in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Mauresmo, only two points from defeat in the second set, rallied to upset third seed Capriati 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the two-hour 17-minute showdown in Arthur Ashe stadium court.

All U.S. Open main draw contestants who play a singles match between opening day and the quarter-final round are eligible for consideration for the award.

It is voted on by current and former professional tennis players and coaches and presented to the player who shows the most grit and determination during a singles match -- elevating his or her game to new levels, regardless of the winner.

John McEnroe will officially present the award, a crystal trophy designed by Tiffany, on Saturday.

As well the trophy, Heineken is making a $5,000 donation in Mauresmo's name to the Twin Towers Fund.

The fund was established to assist, support and recognize the families of the members of the uniformed services of New York Fire, EMS, Police, Port Authority and other government offices who lost their lives or were seriously injured on September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center.

The first Heineken Star Award was presented to Pete Sampras in 1996 for his five-set match against Alex Corretja and he was also the winner last year for his three-and-a-half hour match against second seed Andre Agassi in the semi-finals.

Patrick Rafter won in 1997 by overcoming leg cramps and other ailments in defeating several higher ranked players en-route to the title.

Carlos Moya was the choice in 1998, while Todd Martin won in 1999 for an incredible five-set performance in the third round, and then was presented with the award again in 2000 for his four-hour 17-minute defeat of Moya in the fourth round.

Well deserved award for Amélie!

Congratulations to Amélie! A well deserved award, she has certainly shown a lot of grit and determination this year. I hope she can keep it up!

Is anyone also wondering if they'll give her a box of these too?

sorry, the box was intercepted by JenCap after their match. Just look at the other thread; she's a bit drunk.

Most of MoMo matches with Venus goes to 3 sets. She never wins. I used to like her, not anymore.
