I am excited about Dulgheru mostly because a) she has been moving up the rankings faster than anyone outside the top 100 for the last weeks and b) because she is Romanian and I do tend to support Romanian tennis players.
Truthfully, I have not seen her play. I have no idea if she is winning because she hits hard, because she is consistant and makes few errors or because she covers the court really well. All I know is she must be doing something right.
But I don't want to hype the girl too much. Experience tells me that when a girl zooms the through the rankings like this girl is doing and blows away fields in ITF events it is a good indication a player is heading for the top 100. Winning a 25K is no big deal. Certainly indication at all that a player has a future in the top 100. But winning a 25k with the loss of just 14 games does. This is quite unusual and normally a strong sign the player in question is doesn't belong at that level. Dulgheru's results this week certainly confirm that. She is clearly able to compete with players in the bottom half of the top 100.
So we know barring injury that this girl is heading pretty rapidly into the top 100. Cool. But can we have any expectations above and beyond that? I'd say not yet. Certainly I'd like to see her play a few times, not just once, to get an idea of what she is about. There certainly has been no indication that I can see that this girl is destined for the top 50. Infairness there hasn't been any indication she isn't either. Let's wait and see. This girl may end up with a career similar to someone like Hrdecka, or Lepchenko, or Cohen-Aloro or any number of other players. Which isn't bad. Or she might be better than that.
The fun is that we don't know right now and we have to wait and see.
That's kinda exciting. She really is an unknown quantity. Of course everyone wants to know what she is about.
As for today's match, well Dani is playing well and Dulgheru certainly has yet to do anything to indicate that she can beat an inform top 20 standard player. And Dani inform is certainly at least still top 20 standard. So I think Dani will win. And I like Dani a lot so that is fine with me.
I hope Alexandra gives a good account of herself and Dani plays well to beat her. But like many others in this forum, I'm looking forward to seeing this new girl on the block.
