My comments on Monica's 2002 US Open

Overall, it was a good tournament. Let's not forget that Monica is coming back from an injury and hasn't played during the summer. She had no preparation at all.

She was able to tough out the first couple of rounds including a revenge against Schwartz.

I am also VERY happy that Monica beat Hingis for the 5th time in her career (2nd time in slams). I expect Monica to start gaining the upper hand in her rivalry against Hingis and I hope that they meet again very soon. It's obvious that Monica has all the shots to beat Hingis and I think after this week's win, she will approach matches against Hingis different mentally.

I was very disappointed with the way Monica played tonight against Venus. She didn't serve well, she didn't move well, her return was OFF and she made a lot of errors. Venus was solid overall, but Monica simply didn't play anywhere close to what she's capable of. After seeing earlier this week the Capriati/Seles match from 91, it's obvious that Monica back then was way superior then now in every aspect including her power on the groundstrokes, her intensity (HUGE difference) and her movement (HUGE difference). But anyways I hope Monica improves some of these aspects for next year.

So overall, considering that Monica had no preparation coming in this US Open, I am happy that she made the quarters and that she beat Hingis. A good effort.

Does anyone know what Monica's schedule is for the rest of the year and who's playing in the tournaments that she's entered in? Thanks.

Also, it's funny that at the Australien, Monica beat Venus and then lost to Hingis, and at the US Open Monica beat Hingis and then lost to Venus. At least she's up there with the top players and she can still beat the best of them.

I think Monica hits HARDER now. But the ball lands in the middle of the court near the service box, rather than on the lines.

Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

Monica on the very question you posed Selesrules (from today's interview)

Q. You didn't want to go into the details of the difference between your play now and the clip that was on TV. If you played the Monica from that period, how do you think the match would turn out?

MONICA SELES: It's hard to say because obviously I didn't have to face a serve like Venus' going up in those 115s and stuff like that. That would be a big difference. You know, to compare to that...

Seles was only serving in the mid-80s back then. It was a different game. She's stepped up her serve, but these girls now have the groundies and the serves (that's part of the problem with JCap's comeback too).

One thing I liked: Seles's testiness. I'm glad she had fire this tournament.

is coming for your towel, too.

She's playing Zurich....along with both sisters, and most of the rest of the Top 10.

Well To add something to that is that Hingis is coming from injury as well and don´t forget Martina´s 16-5 head2head over Seles. BTW it was good for her to beat Hingis especially at a grand slam event which she had not done since 1998.

I don´t think Seles played badly, it was just that Venus and Serena are in another level, as Monica said it´s too tough to return their serves, they have a good percentage of the match won already with that serve. Plus the atleticism is also a big part.

BOth Monica and Martina will comeback with better tennis in the next couple of weeks i hope

Monica did have a good tourney run here. Getting deep into the draw these days is no easy task. But I do hope she will do everything necessary to improve her game and come back even stronger. Best Wishes for the future, Monica!

I do think that Monica is hitting harder now, but not by much, and that can be contributed to improved technology of tennis racquets. All in all her performance in this US open was OK. It is that stupid foot injury that is really annoying me- I'm sure that it hurt her a bit throughtout the whole tournament.

Yeah I felt bad for Monica tonight. She was out played. It is a great effort for her to make the quarters of the US as well as every other major this year. Too bad the foot injury took away her preparation for this final slam.

Monica started out the year so promising, that I was hoping for a bit more. She seemed to be in such great shape at the Miami/Nasdaq in March and I am not sure if that loss to Capriati in the semis, after holding 2 match points took a bit of steam out of her. She lost to Foretz a few weeks later and hasn't looked the same fitness wise, since.

Like Tracy Austin said, I hope Monica devotes herself to fitness as much as she devotes herself to tennis. If she gets in tip top shape, the movement/foot speed will make a world of difference.

She definitely needs to work on her movement. I don't think she's fat like some people say (anyone who saw her live this week wouldn't say that) although she could certainly get in better shape. She obviously overdid it in the early part of the year and has never really recovered. Her movement, especially forward, is not good. She really needs to step up to the ball and then won't make some of those easy errors. She is going for the big winner without the proper footwork.

Her movement out wide to her forehand side was also bizarrely bad during this USOpen. I don't know why particularly that side -- her foot perhaps?

Also eventually she needs to work on her serve. It seems she's lost some velocity. I feel that could be much more effective and consistent.

But overall I'm not too disappointed with her USOpen. Her results were better than her condition, and that's a testament to her spirit. Victories over Schwartz and Hingis were very satisfying, and there was really not much she could have done against Venus tonight, even if she were playing better.

It's a good achievement to have been consistent in all the slams this year, hopefully she can end the year as #4 and be in a good position for seeding at next year's slams.

Hopefully she'll play Bahia, Zurich, Linz LA.
