OMG The womens senior matches @ the Open are SO DEPRESSING!

I decided to go w/my Dad to the Open yesterday since he had ground passes, and instead of watching players like Corina Morariu, I ended up getting dragged around to senior matches I saw Navrat's match, but other than that, it was mainly womens senior matches! It was really depressing to watch these matches. We saw Virginia Wade play and this woman was hitting these pattycake first serves and trying to follow them into net, getting creamed every time. Zina was missing some fairly routine overheads and volleys as well. They ended up getting beat 6-0 6-0. However, the most depressing sight was watching Wendy Turnbull play last night. I can't believe they used to call this woman "The Rabbit." She was massive!! Any shot that was three feet away from her, she couldn't chase down. Andrea Leand, (who actually looked impressive out there) just kept hitting drop shot after drop shot on Turnbull. Andrea Leand was probably the best woman we saw out there. She hit a couple of nice aces out there and she hit the crap out of her forehands, although they didn't always land in. When they did, there was nothing that could be done though. She had some nice drive volleys as well. Andrea Leand and Pam Teeguarden were the only 2 women who had not gained at least 30 pounds since retiring. (Pam was stick thin out there and Andrea looked the same) Wendy has to be nearing 200 pounds IMO. Watching them wasn't as depresssing as realizing that players like Jennifer Capriati, Monica Seles, and Serena Williams will be in the same predicament 25 years from now That food for thought almost made me wish I didn't go yesterday!

Very funny account! I enjoyed reading it! Just like to add that it is known that Andrea Leand is one of the best senior players now. But I bet Martina N creams all the women in the senior event.

She would remain the bagel queen without a doubt. Even older out of shape legends cannot take her bagel crown away.

It's a pity the women can't get more than one seniors event. The men have over 35, over 45, and a "Super Senior" event. How can someone Virginia's age(near 60) expect to compete with women closer to 35 like Zina? Just another example of sexism IMO. At least divide them up into two groups!

P.S. Reading Bradshaw's post maybe they should be divided into "weight" classes

Bradshaw, did you get a peak at Ilana Kloss? When I saw in senior dubs in the 90s she still looked and moved great.

I would have felt honored to see such great champions on the court again, regardless of how much weight they gained, or how poorly they played. You were blessed my dear ... you just don't know it yet.

Rollo, I did see get to see Ilana and she had some great touch shots out there. Her shots were lacking a bit in depth and power, but thats to be expected I guess. Her movement was OK as well

And Evonne, I know I'm lucky to get to see these former champions. I just think if my dad would wanted me to get an appreciation for these players, he should have bought a highlight reel of their matches in the 70s and 80s. I've seen Gigi Fernandez in her peak and what she played like was nowhere near what I last remember. It was cool to see former GS champions play, but if I wanted to watch matches of that quality, I would go watch the 3.0-4.0 women at my club play than spend $40 and make a 2 hr trip

Well said, Evonne!!!
And Bradshaw, i understand your point, frankly (about tapes being better than watching them live) but this is what happens to ALL players when they've passed their prime.
They're having fun
They're living legends
There's a Senior Tour, they enjoy it, not IN SPITE of their being plump and old but BECAUSE they're plump and old.
ALL OF US WILL BE.

I have to agree with Way. The legends are much better appreciated on video if you want to see them at their best. But it's still a great buzz to be able to see your old favourites rolling around the court. I will never forget seeing Frankie Durr, Betty Stove, Maria Bueno, Lesley Turner, Ginny Wade, Olga Morozova etc the very first time I went to Wimbledon in 1990. They may have been playing the Legends but it was so wonderful to see these players in the flesh when I had only ever seen them on TV or video before. And the other great thing is that at their age they have mellowed and don't have as much attention so you can easily meet them and chat about their good old days. Most of them really seem to appreciate the attention again!

Long live the legends. Plump, some of them, but legends nonetheless.

Fave recent players: .. Seles .. Hingis .. Serena .. Venus .. Federer .. Roddick .. Hewitt .. Haas .. Rafter .. Safin .. Radwanska ..
60s/70s: Evonne Goolagong .. Francoise Durr .. Chris Evert .. Margaret Court .. Nancy Richey .. Maria Bueno .. Billie-Jean King .. Lesley Turner .. Virginia Wade .. Ken Rosewall .. Rod Laver .. Bjorn Borg ..
Entertainers: .. Diana Ross .. Dionne Warwick .. Shirley Bassey .. Randy Crawford .. Burt Bacharach .. ABBA .. Woody Allen .. Maggie Smith .. Gena Rowlands .. Judy Davis .. Heath Ledger .. Little Britain ..
Inspiration: .. Jeshua Ben Josepth .. Conversations with God .. Abraham with Esther & Jerry Hicks .. P'taah ..

The bottom line is that the Legends can still go on court and PLAY! Today's stars are so battered and worn by serious injuries they may not get that chance when they become older, hey some of them can't seem to get it together in their 20's. I would love to see some of you at 50 years and older. Wendy Turnbull is still able to do what she loves be it bad, good or great! How many of us can say the same!
